Dog Insurance I recently got a yorkie puppy.. and I was wondering. Does anyone get dog insurance? If so, what kind? Which ones are the best ones? Is it worth it? Should I get Choco (my puppy) dog insurance? My budget is kind of tight, but I also do not to pay a large amount of money if Choco gets ill or something... Thanks for your adivce :) |
I know a lot of people get insurance. I don't, so I can't give advise in what insurance to get. I have also read that it might be a better idea to just put the amount of money you would spend on premiums in a savings account and have that as your "insurance". It sounds like in the end it will be cheaper. Again, this is just what I've read. |
I have also been looking around for a really good pet insurance program. What I have seen is that depending on what you want , the prices vary .You pay a cwertain amount a month, and if your dog gets ill, you pay it all, then you are supposed to be reimbursed by the insurance company. There are ones for wellness care, and then more expensive ones for when the dog gets very sick, and requries surgery. You really need to look at the plans very carefully. Some things are not covered. What bothers me is one of the company's would not cover illnesse's that are specific to the breed. Yorkie;s sometimes have liver shunts, eye problems, or pancreites. Which is very expensive to treat. Go on a web search and make sure it is in your State that they offer the insurance. Shop around carefully. :aimeeyork |
I have Embrace Pet Insurance for Sebastian. A friend recommended it to me after we racked up some really big bills when he swallowed a penny a few months ago, and right after that happened we got the insurance. You can choose the amount of coverage you want. The main thing I noticed that they don't cover is pre-existing conditions...so getting it early is better than later. The premium I pay isn't very high. Saving that much away every month would never be enough to cover another emergency situation like the penny incident. |
hmmmm... it sounds like a hard decision... I have seen one insurance company... (it was advertized on this yorkietalk.com) but I really do not know what to put on the plan... I was just thinking of putting common illness coverage? I'll look around for more... I am going to the vet to get Choco his third shot on the 20th.. perhaps I will ask the vet then.... |
I use Pets Best insurance. I have 2 dogs and my payment is $44 a month for illness and accident. You might like to check them out. |
I have VPI for my 3 yorkies and it cost 60.00 a month, It has been well worth it for Cali, Pixie I used it twice when she ate a silca pack and had to go to the er. I think the bill was around 400 and I got reimbursed close to 300. I have it because I do not want to be faced with major bills in case of an accident or illness. They do not cover genetic, hereditary and pre existing conditions and Cali had all 3 so on 7000 in bills we only got back about 2000 I believe, but it helped. Having worked in Insurane for 33 years I would rather have it and not take any chances.JMO |
pet insurance I work for a pet insurance company that will cover congenital and hereditary conditions. If it's not been diagnosed or showing symptoms when the policy is purchased, you're good. Not all pre-existing issues are permanent with us either. Some conditions only have waiting periods, but are fully covered after that amount of time. For you guys with Embrace and Pets Best...please, read your policies. I don't work for either and I won't say anything that I'm not 100% sure is true, but Pets Best won't cover anything congenital (meaning luxating patellas, hip abnormalities, etc.). And dont get me wrong, Embrace is pretty good, but if your pet has a chronic condition like arthritis, your reimbursements drop dramatically as the years go on. I've seen pet insurance work and save the lives of many dogs and cats. My own dog gets more use out of his policy than I'd like. I won't use this as an advertisement but if you go to Pet Insurance Review I'm sure you'll know who I work for. If anyone has specific questions, by all means post them or email me and I'll be happy to answer them. |
