Hydroxyzine Took Max to the vet yesterday because he has been very itchy, sneezy, etc. lately. Vet said it was probably allergies and put him on Hydroxyzine, 10 mg, 2x per day (did not mention allergy testing). I just read on the internet this medication can cause seizures in dogs. Yikes. Max has only taken 4 pills and is still scratching albeit less. Should I have him allergy tested and if so do all vets have the ability to allergy test or is this a specialty? |
My Cali has bad allergies and even after allergy testing and diet changes she still scratches. The Hydroxyzine didn't do anything to help her. I have just finished steroids which stopped the itching but as soon as we weaned her off she started scratching again. I now have her on Atopica which is expensive and she has been on it for 9 days and she has reduced her scratching but not completley. Hopefully your baby has seasonal allergies and they will clear up soon. If not then maybe testing will help. Good luck |
YUP - Roxy has been on Hydroxyzine as well. From what I can gather, Hydroxyzine needs to be *built* up for a while in their system and then it works, IDK - she was on it for a while, but it wasn't working enough :( I have changed her diet, added Coconut Oil and Vitamin E daily, on the weekends I add Apple Cider Vinegar and Aloe Vera Gel to her food, I bath her in a special shampoo and for the last 2 months I have resorted back to 1/2 Children's Benedryl in the AM and PM :( |
Otis was on it last year. It does take, I think, 3 weeks or so, to build up in their system. He never had any seizures. So far he hasn't needed it this year but we'll see. The vet said he had "hay fever". Good luck, we didn't have any problems with hydroxyzine. Hope your baby feels better soon. Another tip... you may already know this.. limit baths to every 3-4 weeks or longer. Bathing may make their skin more itchy. |
Stella was on Hydroxyzine but after a few days she started acting paranoid, couldn't tell it helped the scratching much. She is taking Atopica and the scratching has improved alot, after a month of taking it daily we were able to start every other day which has helped with the expense. Sometimes it does cause an upset tummy which is one of the side effects. We didn't have allergy testing either but she was scratching so badly we couldn't risk clearing her system to do the test at that time. My vet could do the test where they draw blood but for the skin scratch test she would have to go to an allergist. From what I have been told the results of the first test (blood) sometimes isn't very conclusive. Good luck, itchy furbutts are the pits |
We are having all these same issues meds not working, inconclusive tests and now using the children's Benedryl. I am going tomorrow to by some of that anti itch spray. I made a post about it yesterday and many people said it worked well. We will see I guess. |
Thanks for the information everyone! Max is still scratching but has only taken 4 pills. Hopefully it will help. I think I will definitely do more research on his diet and try some things. I am trying to remove all beef from his diet now as I read here a lot of Yorkies are allergic to it. Of course taking his bully sticks might take an act of Congress. :D Thanks again! |
corn and chicken are also pretty high on the allergy list. |
Rigger has summer alergies. We did not know what it was last year and we tried limiting his diet and usiing special foods, etc. under the supervision of the Vet. Nothing worked so through the process of elimination we have determined it is something in the air or grass in the summer months. He goes once a month and gets a shot of prednisone aqueois. He only needs this in May, June and July. By September it is all over. |
