Blood in stool
 
I'm scared. I have an appt for the vet at 445 today.... We switched Mickey to a raw diet two weeks ago (NV and Primal). He was doing great on it until today. I just took him for a walk and his stool was liquidy with some drops of blood in it. Any ideas what this could be from? COuld he have gotten an bacterial infection from the food? He hasnt eaten anything else. Liek i said we are going to the vet today ...I'm just trying to prepare myself... Mickey's never been sick. :(

Blood in the stool is very scarey but also common. It doesn't necessarily mean something really bad. It def. needs to be checked by the vet. tho'. They will prob. want a stool sample if you get a chance to snag one before you go. Dont be too frightened. Good luck.

It could very well be a intestinal bacteria infection. The vet will also need to rule out coccidia and giardia. I will keep your baby in my thoughts and prayers. Please let us know what the vet says.

We got back from the vet a little while ago. Mickey tested negative for Giardia and Coccidia (Thank God!) The vet said that it is probably just a little stomach bug that he could have picked up anywhere- out on a walk or at the dog park. He gave Mickey and anti- diarreah shot, and sent us home with some mets and some paste that is simialar to nutrical. Mickey should be back to normal in no time! :)

That is wonderful news. I pray Mickey has a speedy recovery.

Logan recently had this problem and was diagnosed with coccidia. The blood went away after just one dose of his medication.

I just went through this last week with my Gus. Unfortunately, he was too dehydrated when I got him to the hospital, and he had to spend the night. Only one antibiotic pill left, and he's done; he's back to his old self now. But damn, that was scary!

I am glad to hear your boy has made a complete recovery. Yes, it is very scary. That is why it is so important to take action at the first sign of diarrhea. What was it that Gus had?

He had a bacterial infection in his GI tract of unknown origin. Could have picked it up at the dog park or on a walk, or could have just built up over time (the emergency vet said that this is more prevalent in small dogs). But he got dehydrated because he simply could not keep even a little water down, and since they're so tiny they can get dehydrated pretty fast. He was on the fence, but I chose to leave him for IV fluids to be safe.

I know when dogs are outside they will eat just about anything. I am just glad your boy is doing well now.
