My 2.5 lbs Yorkie ate LOTS of ham fat, help Hello, I don't know what to do and what to expect. I never fed human food to my dog and in the middle of the night last night he found a little plastic bag with the leftovers (fat) of a ham we cooked and ate it all. There was quite a bit of it and I am so scared of what will happen? Can he die?! Plus I was told that once a dog tastes human food, especially small dogs, I will have a very hard time feeding him dry dog food again and he might actually get stubborn and stop eating.. So now I have two concerns!! Has this ever hapened to anyone of you? Thanks for your advises!!! |

Hello and welcome to YT! I don't want to scare you any more than you already are, but ham is bad for dogs because of the high salt and fat and sometimes dogs that eat ham end up with pancreatitis. I don't know if anything can be done before a dog gets symptoms, but I think you should call your vet right away and tell him what happened. Hopefully he/she can get a head start on treating him. I hope and pray your little one does okay, but please see your vet. I don't think you have to worry about him not liking dog food after eating human food. He will eat the dog food when he gets hungry enough. Please keep us updated. I'll say a prayer for your baby! |

I undersstand how scary it is when our little dogs get into something they should not ! i Hope your dog will be okay! I really do n ot know if this will harm your dog, because it was the first time it ever happened, I think it will be ok. I think if it was happening all the time then tere is a big problem. Just make sure yours is drinking water, and eating .Your dog will eat when hungry . his/her regular food. Talk to your vet too, just for your piece of mind, and your dogs safety. :aimeeyork |

Please call the vet and ask them what to do. They will probably say to just watch him but at the first sign of vomiting or diarrhea I would suspect pancreatitis which is dangerous, especially if left untreated. Please keep us updated. |
