Should I get a puppy with known mvd I've had a depsit on a new puppy for a few weeks. The breeder took her in Friday fo BAT. Her numbers were 36 and26. Her father has asymtomatic MVD. He is 7 and has never had any problems. Not on any treatment all. He is now part of the Cornell study on Shunt disease. The breeder is going to let me have her for almost nothing just to give her a good home. Right now she is healthy and active. I'm not sure what to do. We also have a 6 month male who will be neutered tomorrow. I lost my 7 yr old yorkie 3 weeks ago to renal disease and it was pretty traumatic for me to lose him. THis scares me about the new dog, but she needs a home and we would like to give it to her and hold our breath and see what happens. What do you all think? |
i think if your heart can handle the heart break if she shows symptomes and if you can afford the medical care then go for it. lacey has mvd and has symptomes like ls dogs and there are pleanty of days i feel so sorry for her. today is a really bad day but for a couple of months she was doing fine. its a roller coaster ride at times. i wouldnt give her up for anything, she is the sweetest dog and has the best personality:) |
What a decision... I think it really comes down to you and what you feel you can handle. No one would blame you if you didn't bring home a puppy knowing it was sick — especially since you've just suffered a loss. Just because her father has not shown symptoms, doesn't mean that she will be so lucky. I've recently found out that BOTH my dogs are liver compromised — Ruthie is suspected to have a shunt, and Oscar MVD. They are both over 2 years old, so I thought I was 'in the clear'. Ruthie's symptoms appeared out of nowhere about a month ago. Oscar has never had any symptoms, his was picked up during routine bloodwork. I know that there are a lot of people on here whose dogs are living quality lives with MVD, but I think if it were me, I would want to start fresh with a healthy puppy. At least the money you save by not paying for her would help with any medical needs she may have down the road. Why is your breeder breeding a male with MVD??? Doesn't sound very responsible… While it is nice that she is offering the puppy to you basically for free, that male should be removed from her breeding program IMO. |
My 3 year old Cali has very mild MVD. BA scores of 94 and then 43. She has no symptoms and no medicine or diet restrictions. If you feel you could take on a puppy financially and emotionally that may have health issues then I would. I also think she shouldn't charge anything for the puppy based on future vet bill potential. |
We got her today. I decided to go ahead and toss the dice and see what happens. Who knows what the future will bring. The breeder didn't breed on purpose. He got out of the crate and it only took5 mins. It was an accident. The other puppies were tested ok. Go figure. Anyway, she has been up front about this and she just needed a good home for this sweet little pup. Yes, I wish she were "healthy", but who knows what problems even healthy dogs come up with. We just decided to take our chances. Hopefully, she wil live a very long life with no problems. The male was neutered and he is actually part of the Cornell University study being done on this disease. |
Congrats!!!! I have a 7 year old, Zeus, who has MVD. He was diagnosed at 10 months and he is living a "healthy", normal life. His care is pretty simple. Prescription food and Denosyl SD4. |
congrats! keep in touch:thumbup::animal-pa |
