Thank you for saying that... that's actually one of the things that upsets me as well — some people look at me like I'm crazy for having spent what I have on my dogs, and then I worry that others will judge me for NOT opting to do surgery or MORE and MORE tests. At some point, I think we just have to let nature take its course. My dogs are so tiny, I can't imagine putting the stress of surgery and invasive testing on their little bodies. So long as they are happy and 'healthy' I can't justify the cost or risk.

Hi. Sorry to hear about your babies. I have a 7 year old, Zeus, who was diagnosed with MVD at 10 months. He is being managed medically with prescription food and Denosyl SD4 daily. If your puppies are asymptomatic, then if it were me, I would wait on the surgery. I would put Oscar on the scrip food. He may never show symptoms. I wish you well in making the decisions you feel are right for your puppies. Juliet

Thanks Juliet — I think I recall you telling me about Zeus in my other thread about Ruthie's shunt. It makes a huge difference to hear other people's stories - to know that there are 'exceptions to the rule' out there, and other people/pets going through the same thing.

At this point, I am ruling out surgery for both dogs — I just can't justify it in my mind. I agree, that if anything, I would put Oscar on the same food as Ruthie (canned l/d) which would also make feeding time much easier!

Ultrasounds are the least reliable in finding a shunt. IF these were big dogs it is a little easier to see a shunt, but in a small dog, it is just not reliable. I would never do exploratory surgery unless the Protein C test came back bad. I will find the link so you can check it out!

I guess every vet is different and everyone's idea. I have heard that this test is the way to go and a BA isn't. Everyone has their own idea although if it was me I would choose to verify before surgeries. Here is the link:

Only you can decide what to do no matter how much you hate to have to make that decision. I'm so sorry you are going through this. It has to be just horrible.:(

I'm so sorry to read that your other baby might have liver issues...

I agree that I would *not* jump into more testing or more surgery for him at this point. With a BAT of 51 and no symptoms whatsoever, this is what I would do...
I would put my dog on the same food as Ruthie and maybe one of the supplements like Denosyl or Denamarin, and do a BAT in 30 days. If it's normal, great news!! If it's still elevated, you're probably dealing with MVD.
Make sure that before the next BAT, you do not give any meds or flea/heartworm stuff within two weeks of it, so that those things can't throw off the numbers.
This way, you will have a much better idea of what's going on...

I was wondering about that… Oscar just had his vaccines yesterday and is supposed to go in tomorrow morning for the BAT — I guess I should cancel it and wait a bit? I am also supposed to be applying his Advantage tonight, but maybe I shouldn't?

Medication and especially vaccines can skew the results.
I would put the test off.

I canceled Oscar's liver function test for today. I will wait a couple weeks at least before getting it done. I've decided to start feeding him the canned l/d that Ruthie is on in the meantime.

I would agree with you. I wish now that I did not have Gizmo's surgery. I wish we had tried more medical management. There are several things that I have heard of since I lost him that I did not know about before. If they were living happy little lives now, just love them each day and enjoy the time you have. I'm so sorry that you lost your little Gizmo :( Just the thought of losing either of my pups brings me to tears I just love them so dearly. You are absolutely right, at some point we have to let nature take its course (so long as they aren't suffering) and just enjoy the time we have with them — and spoil them rotten in the meantime!

I would question the vet's judgement in giving vaccines one day and scheduling a BAT the next. I recently went through a vet's mis-diagnosis with one of my girls about a heart condition. I got a second opinion from a clinic that specializes in internal medicine and my original vet was completely wrong. It may cost more to go see the best, but it is money well spent. If you don't know who to go to, try getting a referral from a vet that specializes in some field. They might help point you in the right direction. The clinic I took my dog to to have her properly diagnosed had 8 doctors working there and had all the diagnostic equipment in house. IMO, this is the type of place you would like to find as opposed to a vet with a solo practice. Good luck with your babies. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :)
