Help! My puppy has diarrhea. My puppy is 17 almost 18 weeks old. She has had all of her vaccinations. She had her last shots almost 3 weeks ago. She has never been outside as long as I have had her and I got her at 12 weeks. She has had diarrhea off and on for about a week. I was going to call the vet but I thought it was cleared up and then tonight it started again. I am feeding her the same food the breeder fed her, Orijen puppy. She hasn't had any other food or any stressors. I am getting very worried about her. The diarrhea is dark almost black and completely liquid. Her rear end is all wet. I will probably call her vet tomorrow. Any advice? I have never had a dog have diarrhea and I have raised several dogs. |
the vet is a good idea. You could feed her some canned pumpkin - make sure its 100% pumpkin. Also, you may want to try some chicken broth and withhold the other food for a day or 2 |
diarrhea Some people give their little ones baby rice cereal to help with firmer stools, but just a little since baby cereal if fortified with other vitamins and iron. I think the vet should be called first. Hope your baby gets well soon! |
How is your puppy doing today? For future references, pure canned pumpkin works great for diarrhea and constipation. You would give a teaspoon twice a day. There are several things that can cause diarrhea like you described, coccidia, giardia, and stomach bacterial infections are the most common causes. It is always best to take a stool sample to the vet if the diarrhea persists more than a day. I always keep on hand a product like DiaGel, DiaBac or Diarsanyl. These products can be bought at Revival Animal Health Product and they work well for diarrhea that is caused by from bacteria in the GI tract. |
Since it's been a week now - I'd recommend you get her in right away since she is so young. In the meantime, get some canned pumpkin right away. Is she eating/drinking okay? Give some yogurt as well (plain or vanilla, low fat). |
Thanks for the responses. She is eating, drinking, and playing fine. She is sleeping a little more than usual. I called the vet and they had me bring in a fecal sample. They tested for giardia, coccidia, parvo, and a bunch of other things. The fecal sample came back clean. They said to just make sure she was getting enough to eat and drink. They thought she just had an upset stomach and will get over it soon. I am going to give her some pumpkin this evening. |
Poor baby! Well, good news that it came back clean - and it stinks that you don't have an answer, huh? Argh. Giardia, btw, is notorious for hiding under scope - so they may need to test for that again. Give yogurt too - as the live cultures will help her digestive system. :) |
