Can coccidia be spread help
 
I had brought a new puppy 9 weeks old into the house. I had taken the pup to the vet and the stool was positive for coccidia. I treated the pup with albon. I have read were the dog could reinfect itself it if eats contaminated feces even if it had been on the albon. If you give the albon for 9 days, and the follow up feces does not test positive for coccidia, should you wait at least 13 days before doing another fecal exam to make sure the pup is cleared of the coccidia.

I am very concerned because I have a female who just whelped her puppies and we are keeping the dogs apart in the house and they eat and sleep in completely different rooms. The pup is being trained with pee pads and dog littler in a different room. My female has not been in close contact to the pup.
Everyone has washed hands and even went so far to change their clothes before going around the newborns.
I just want to make sure everyone stays healthy.

Sounds like you are taking a lot of precautions. What does your vet say? You could also post this in the breeders' section. There are many knowledgeable members there.

Here is some good information on coccidia:
Coccidia

Most likely your female will not give coccidia to her puppies unless she was already infected. Coccidia is hard to find in the stool if the patient is not having an outbreak (diarrhea). Your puppy could come back with a clean stool sample but could still be carrying coccidia. If your momma dog had coccidia as a puppy then she too could also carry coccidia and pass it to her puppies. It is hard to break the cycle once it starts.

The original sample I took to the vet( from the new pup) was not diarrhea so I was glad we caught it early.
Angel had coccidia but it was 1 year ago when she had it and was treated and no fecal specimens have tested positive for it since.

Since I am aware of this from the beginning, the new pups are only 9 days old. They would have to contract it from either licking her behind or eating her feces? I take her to another room in the house to eliminate . I had just read some horror stories on a few threads about puppies getting coccidia. I just don't want to take any chances. If they were to test possitive for it. How young can albon be given to a dog?

Keep in mind if the momma every had coccidia she could still be harboring it even if she tests negative. Did the momma have any diarrhea after having puppies? If she did have diarrhea and the puppies came in contact with it then they could get coccidia from the mom if the mom has coccidia. It takes about 3 weeks from the time they ingest the coccidia until they can start shedding it. I think albon would be safe to give to pups as young as 3 weeks if they were having diarrhea. It would be best to consult your vet on that. I would recommend just watching the stools on the puppies and unless they start getting diarrhea you can wait until they are 4 weeks old to have a stool sample checked.

Thank you I will talk to my vet. Momma did have diarrhea but she ate 4 placenta's, and I was giving her too much cottage cheese 4 times a day. I had her feces tested after about the 4th day of diarrhea, and it tested negative. I guess I was trying to get clear in my head a time line to go by so if by chance the puppies were exposed then I would be prepared, and they could be treated etc. I have the whelping box in my room. Angel is taken downstairs and to the front porch to eliminate. A couple of times she has had diarrhea in my room but on the other side of the room by my husbands side of the bed. I got the spot bot out. I love that machine.
I don't plan on trying to get Angel and the new pup acquainted till next week. Now Davey and Angels fecal's are testing negative.
It's funny but when my other dog had this also I none of them had diarrhea. It's just a policy of my vet to check them periodically.
So one more question is it true to say they never totally get rid of this . Until they are stressed ? then they may test positive again,even after being treated after the initial positive test?

That is what I have heard. Dogs can have coccidia but stress can cause the coccidia to start shedding and that causes the diarrhea. If the mom tested negative then that is a good sign. I have know several cases where the dogs tested negative and a few days later when they had diarrhea they tested positive. I have heard that if a dog has just a few coccidia in them that it is sometimes hard to detect in a fecal exam. Please keep us posted on how your puppies do and if they do end up with coccidia. I wish more breeders were like you and were aware of the dangers of coccidia. If all breeders would have their dogs and puppies checked it would save the puppy buyers a lot of heartache. Puppy buyers should be made aware that coccidia is fairly common and it is easy to treat if caught early.

I baught a puppy on internet that is a poop eater...now she's taught my other dogs to eat poop...How can I break this awful problem...Those thing I have baught do not work.

All mommy dogs get giardia/coccia from cleaning puppy's butt, then drinks water, puppy drinks from same water bowl and the worm is passed on. It's almost never ending. The answer is to treat your pet. I order my products from ANIMAL WELLNESS CENTER in Ny. Best product I have ever found...Pegi

I've never heard of this being passed on from drooling. I thought it has to be shallowed and matures in the gut and bowel to multipy?

I was told that puppies couldn't be born with coccidia. They would have to eat their mothers contaminated feces and or Lick her behind. So until pups were lapping up food from a communal source, while they are just suckling from the teats of their mother, then shouldn't they be safe from being contaminated?

You are correct in how coccidia is spread. Puppies are not born with coccidia. Giardia is found in contaminated water and can be transported on the feet or coat if a dog drinks contaminated water. Once giardia is in the stool it can also be passed to another dog that comes in contact with the feces. I have never had a dog with giardia but I have read where a number of dogs on YT have had it. I found this very interesting article on giardia:

I was not aware that giardia could be passed from dog to humans. Also, once a dog has giardia he will probably have it all his life.

Probiotics are also a good way to keep this bad bacteria under control.

pet flora and activia yogurt will help with this.

Thank you for the article, it was interesting. My dogs have never had diarrhea except when Angel (whelped her pups and ate 4 placentas and I gave her cottage cheese 3 times a day). I had fecal test done today on Angel and Davey and they were both negative. I am thankful. I try my best to keep them healthy. I try to be atttentive to their changes in behavior for what ever this may mean and address it accordingly. I just don't want to guess what I am doing.

Sick again now with Campylo Bacter
 
Little Davey now has bloody diarrhea and it was cultered out with Campylo Bacter.

I have no idea were this is coming from. Just some one please tell me some good nesw and not the possiblitiy of Liver Shunt.

I am having a hard time dealing the stress . I already lost one dog this last month.
