Constipation in a puppy Hello, I've had my Yorkie for five days now, and for the first two days she was having healthy bowel movements. On the third day she had diarrhea; since then, she's been straining unproductively. I've read in many places that canned pumpkin can help alleviate constipation, but in an emergency thread on this site, gylcerine is recommended. Can anyone tell me if canned pumpkin is okay for a 9-week-old puppy, or if I should find glycerine somewhere instead? Thanks so much! |

Help!! Okay, I have the canned pumpkin but she won't take it -- I don't think she's had anything to eat or drink all day. I held her and tried to force her mouth open but she started shivering really hard so I stopped. What should I do? I'm about to bring her to the animal hospital. I know I'm probably overreacting but she's so little and I can't stand the thought of her being in pain. She has been so frisky up until now, and tonight all she wants to do is lay in her bed (or on me) and get up every 15 minutes or so to start straining again. |
Please take her to the vets. It sounds like she might have coccidia. It is better to get her checked out. |
How is your puppy doing today? I hope all is well. |
Thanks for asking! Yes, Blake is fine. I took her to the animal hospital last night as soon as I got your message (it didn't sound like coccidia, but I was worried anyway). It turns out that she had a blockage of feces, and once that was removed she was fine. She wanted to eat right away and had a normal bowel movement. And this morning she was jumping all over the place and wanting to play again! Thanks so much for your help -- I am so relieved. And I'm so happy to have found this forum for advice! :) |
