Maggie has a bladder stone, has to have surgery - I'm a wreck, info please... Maggie had ultrasound and xray today, she has a bladder stone and needs surgery. Of course I'm a nervous wreck at the thought of this. Info please? Is this surgery worse than surgery for spaying? I'm trying to get some kind of a feel for what I'm going to be dealing with. Are complications common? How serious of a procedure is it? Thanks for any help you can give me. I'm so upset I feel nauseated. I just lost my 10 year old Yorkie, Munchie two months ago, I don't want to have to go thru this, but have no choice. Poor little Maggie. She is 2 years old and weighs 4 lbs, btw. |
Jan I don't have any info on the stones btu I wanted to let you know she will be in my prayers. |
I'm sorry.:( What kind of stones are they? |
It's just one stone, but it looked rather large, I watched him do the ultrasound. They won't know what type of stone it is until they do surgery and analyze it. |
I'm so sorry your baby has to go through this. Hope all goes well. |
Did they check your baby's urine pH? Did they check for crystals? |
One thing to keep in mind after the surgery is to make sure they have it analyzed. I would recommend having a bile acid test done because many times, bladder stones and issues are the only symptom of liver issues, particularly if the stone is ammonium biurate. |
I check her ph daily, it's always a 7 - yes, i'm having bile acid test done and complete blood panel, also, and they will analyze the stone after they remove it. I just hope it isn't liver shunt. She comes from very reputable breeder, with no history of liver shunt in her bloodline, so here's to hopin' They are doing surgery on June 10th. My vet assured me that it won't be worse than having her spayed, she said it's pretty routine surgery, and she was very reassuring. I'm just so worried about her.... |
I'm sure she will be okay. That's great that you went ahead with the bloodwork. I will pray for your little baby. Before I got the stones under control, my baby had to have bladder stone surgery on more than one occassion. |
I fostered a female 3 yo. Peke right after her surgery. Yes, it is serious surgery and there are web sites that will show you exactly what is done. You have to be vigilant afterward to make sure their urine is not concentrated and the food has to be changed. Frequent urine tests also. Take care and Bladder Stone Surgery in Dogs and Cats at ThePetCenter.com.. Also, there are two types of stones. Warmly, Deborah |
I Rather It Be Me Instead Of Them!! I understand your agony with this sitiation.... Nygee is 6 yrs old, but when she was 3 she had a cystotomy to remove bladder stones.... Surgery was a success, and she was put on Hill's U/D diet for the rest of her life... She gained massive weight on this diet, last Aug. she had problems standing & walking, I thought she might've broken a bone or torn a ligament, so we rushed to the vet... He did x-rays, and it revealed she had not broken or torn anything.... But she had developed bladder stones once again... She gained 3 lbs since her cystotomy 3 yrs ago, and developed the stones once again, what a dilemma... How agonizing is that? So she was put on Hill's R/D to reduce weight... Since last Aug. she's lost 2 lbs, which I thought was great... Now he can do a 2nd cystotomy!!! So we do another set of x-rays, and guess what? She not only has bladder stones, but she developed kidney stones as well.... This is heartbreaking.... She has shown no sign of anything wrong.... That's mindblowing... Nygee has calcium oxalate stones, which can only be surgically removed... Following is a link with lots of critical information and steps that should be taken to avoid new formations... My vet did none of what is suggested after a cystotomy, and reoccurrence is very much likely within 3 yrs if not taken proper methods of prevention... Good Luck, And Maggie's in my prayers...:hands: Canine Oxalate Bladder Stones |
That is the same formula food that my foster Peke was placed on. However, if you look at the ingredients, it is all filler and the protein is minimal. I would advise following surgery or before, to see a holistic vet because most vets just prescribe Hill's or Royal Canin. Follow-up urine tests are very important. Good luck! Warmly,Deborah |
My Maggie also had bladder stones at age 8. I believe they were struvite. Recovery was easy . She did well and I read alot after that we went holistic and organic. Also we took alot of other precautions beacause I heard they easily come back to dogs who are prone to them. She made it to 16 with no other stones. |
Thanks so much for all the encouraging words.. All of you are making me feel much better about this. Once surgery is over and stone is analyzed, I'll be talking to all of you again. Jan and Maggie.... |
Maggie will be in my prayers for a safe and easy surgery, |
