Need advice- Cystitis Hello, My 6 month old male pup, who was just neutered on Tuesday, was just diagnosed with cystitis last night! His urine was brown/reddish, and I knew that meant there was blood in it, so I took him to the emergency vet. Otherwise he was acting fine. Appetite was good, energy level was good. I was really scared and upset. They gave him a 7 day course of antibiotics and hopefully it clears it up. But I will need to have him reassessed. I hope he does not have any stones. They suggested that I have him drink LOTS of water, and I am trying. I have plenty of fresh water around my house, but he is just drinking his usual. Does anyone have any advice of how to encourage him to drink more water?? Thank you. I appreciate your help. |
Sure....: Ice cubes, and gatorade, it makes them drink extra... pedialyte is also great for them , just freese on an ice cube tray and give as an extra liquid... Also soup.... i mean, broth... chicken broth in between the meals.... dilute it to make him drink more... Those are my tricks to give extra fluids when we need to... Good luck !!! |
I AGREE pedialyte MAKES THEM DRINK MORE WATER I BELIVE IS BECAUSE IT CONTAINS SODIUM AND MAKES THEM MORE THIRSTY. .. WHEN BOBBY WAS SICK AND HE WOULD NOT DRINK WATER AT ALL I USE TO MAKE HIM PLAY WITH HIS TOYS OR JUST TRY TO MAKE HIM EXERCISE SO HE CAN DRINK WATER AND IT SEEM TO WORK WITH HIM. I HOPE YOUR PUP FEELS BETTER. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU! |
Thank you for your suggestions so far. I am definitely going to try them!! |
Did they check to see if he had any crystals or stones? That's very important. Sometimes when there's blood, there's stone/crystals... My yorkie has a long history of bladder stone issues which are completely under control now and have been for almost 1 yr. Don't add anything salty to make your baby drink more because you could cause more problems that way. Feed equal parts food to equal parts water. So, if you feed 1/4 cup of food at each feeding then add at least 1/4 cup of water to that food at each feeding. The more moisture he gets right now, the better. This helps keep his urine dilute to prevent stone formation. Another thing you can do to get more moisture in him is to give him a little watermelon (no seeds). This is very high in moisture and safe. |
Thanks for your reply. Yes they did a urinalysis and there are crystals. I have been putting water in his dry food and that helps a lot. He also loves his wet food and water too so I have to get more of that. |
