Daisy just swallowed pencil lead Daisy just swallowed pencil lead and I can't get through to my vet's office and the emergency clinic doesn't open until 6 PM. Should I make her throw it up or will she be OK? It was from a wooden #2 pencil and she at the tip of it off. I caught her with it and the lead from the end was gone. What should I do? PS Daisy is 2 years old and weighs 8 lbs 9 oz. |
I just got through to the vet's office, they have me on hold while she checks with the vet... |
Hmmm, I'm confused. They said it shouldn't be a problem, but if I want to, to make her throw up. Now, if it won't cause a problem, why make her throw up? That makes absolutely no sense! |
I wish I knew what to do in your situation! I'd be going crazy! Don't you love how the vets often make us feel silly for worrying about our pets? I hope everything works out fine! |
Pencils aren't made of lead. They are made of graphite. It shouldn't be a problem. I would be concerned with the texture of it in her intestines but I would also be concerned to make her throw it up. If it were Ellie I'd probably let it go unless the vet said otherwise. |

Actually Daisy probably swallowed graphite right? Graphite is harmless if swallowed, although I did read that you might want to keep an eye on her bc if she swallowed any slivers of wood they could cut her digestive tract (not to scare you more) ... but Im sure she'll be fine :) :) |
Thank You ladies. Graphite! Good :) I honestly was thinking lead! Hubby was about as much help as the vet's office, but of course they are his babies too...I don't think she got much of the wood. The pencil seems pretty much intact. At this point I'm not going to give her any hydrogen peroxide. I'll just keep a close eye on her. Thanks again...whew! |
I just thought I'd let everyone know that Daisy is fine :) I do appreciate those who chimed in and set my mind at ease. Thank You. |
Glad to hear. I just saw this now. |
My little guy ate a pencil too and the first thing I thought was that he was going to get lead poisoning! After realizing that they dont make them out of lead im a bit relieved. However, he ate the pencil about 2 days ago and is not really feeling well. Do you think this is because of the upset stomach from eating wood and graphite? Did you dog show any signs of sickness after eating the pencil tip? We are trying to get a vet appointment at a new vet since we have quit our last vet - a different horror story - needless to say im a bit relieved that #2 pencils dont use lead... Any additional advice until we can see the vet? |
