False Pregnancy Hello, I am looking for advice from someone that has had any experience with false pregnancies. I am pretty sure my girl is having a false pregnancy- almost 99% sure- and i am not sure what to expect, or if i should do anything about it since this is my first female dog. I have done some research, but I would like to hear your guys advice as well. Here is the background..... We adopted Mallory in the middle of February. She is our second addition (we have a neutered one year and 3 month old male). She is not yet spayed. We had an appointment and then she went into heat almost right after we got her in March. While she was in heat my NEUTERED male Mickey tried humping her- and she let him - they actually got stuck together... I was SHOCKED since is neutered! Fast forward to 6-8 weeks after her heat and we notice that her mammary area and nipples are getting swollen. Well tonight my boyfriend was rubbing her tummy and when he pointed out that her nipples are getting bigger he squeezed one a little bit and a milky fluid came out. This has to be a false pregnancy right?? It seems consistent with what I am reading. Anyone with any experience want to help me?! It doesnt seem like I have to run to the vet..... Other than this she is perfectly normal and happy and doesnt appear sick at all. She is eating and drinking and doing everything normal. So hear is my question.... What do i do??? Should I see the vet? anything that i should do for the milky stuff coming out or to help her through this? Anything else i should expect? She has an appointment for mid-june to get spayed- will she be able to get spayed? I really know nothing about this so any input is appreciated- like i said this is my first female! Thanks! |
Wow, My Wire Hair Fox Terrier is neutered and he has nothing left...in the male anatomy that is. Maybe your little male is not quite completely neutered? Maybe the vet missed something  I didn't think they could do or want to if all of their testosterone was gone? My husband was required to get a vasectomy after our 4th child and he still works ;) ~LOL~ Good luck! |
My girl has gone through a number of false pregnancies. You shouldn't have to take her to the vet, just keep an eye on her. Her body literally thinks she is pregnant (esp. since she tied), so she will go through all of the hormonal changes. As you have seen, her teets will swell and sometimes there will be milk. I don't think there is anything you need to do, she may be more sensitive during this time and require a lot of attention. Just keep an eye out for any type of vaginal discharge which is not normal. Other than that, I say wait it out. Also going to say if the milk discharge becomes an abnormal color, take her to the vet, she could have an infection. Otherwise, will eventually dry up and her teats will go back to normal size. |
It does sound like a false pregnancy. She should be fine. The main worry would be if she develops pymetra (uterus infection). As long as she is eating normally and not running any temperature she should be fine. It is also normal for neutered males to still have their sex drive, especially if the neutering is done after the male is sexual mature. |
