Just got back form the vet with Tatum - question?
 

I took Tatum in to see the vet today because she started scratching like crazy at her left ear again and because of her scratching it, it starting bleeding. This happened not too long ago but then she seemed to be better. Well, it started again over the weekend so I made an appointment today to take her in and we just got back.

SIGH.....Tatum has an infection in both ears. My Lord, this girl, I tell you! She has always got something. It's pretty bad when they know both you and your dog BY NAME at the vets office! :( It seems that we are in there ALL the time.

She is BACK on Clavamox (for the umpteenth time) :rolleyes: but they also gave her some antibiotic for her ears. The first is in a tube and is sort of clear and gel like - it is called Malotic/Gentizol/tric-otic.....GEEZ, what a name! :eek: And the second is an Otirinse Ear Cleaner called Animal PharmaAceuticals Cucumber Melon 0 / Ear Cleaning and Drying Solution (this stuff smells just like juicy watermelons!! :D).

Has anyone used these on their babies? I sure do hope they work well :( Hopefully the Clavamox will also help clear up the infection pretty quickly, but I was just wondering about the other two?

Anyone ever used them?? :confused:

Hi Brooke - poor Tate!!!! It always seems like it's something!!

I haven't used either of those products, but I do regularly use an ear cleaner called Dr. Gold's Extra Gentle Ear Therapy on both girls every time they get a bath (which is at least once every other week), You basically squirt it in the ear canal, massage the ear a bit and just wash them as normal. It "cleans, disinfects and deodorizes" and "treats infections and fungus".

When I first got Sissy, my vet recommended using an ear cleaner regularly because Yorkies are susceptible to ear issues.

After I use up all of this ear cleaner, I will definitely try some of the one that you mentioned - it sounds wonderful! Do you know where to order it online? Or, I can just do a search :p The stuff that I have now from the vet I have to use once daily for one week, then twice per week and every time (after) she has her bath. And the other stuff (the gel stuff in the tube) I have to do the same with - well, until it's gone that is. This one is an antibiotic that treats infections, so it isn't used all the time like the ear cleaner is.

I have used the Tri-Otic before on one of my girls and it worked well, the only problem I had was her letting me put in in her ears, she didn't like it too much. Hope your baby girl is better soon!!!

I get it from my local pet store PetsMart. You could try doing an online search, or I can get some and send it to you :)!

BTW, we just got back from the vet, too!! Distemper booster for Angel and Sissy' rash on her vulva area (fungal infection, possible UTI)!!!!

Thank you so much Pam! I am soooo glad to hear that it worked well for your baby! I just want to get RID of this darn ear infection! With my luck though, once this is gone something else will just pop up :( It seems like that's about how it has been working with her lately :(

I put it in Tatum's ears already today and she wasn't too crazy about it, but she didn't fight me either. Her left ear definitely bothers her more than her right, so she gets a little bit squirmy when I go to mess with that one, but it's nothing I can't handle, thank goodness. Now if it were my other baby, Stedman, we would have a BIG problem :p LOL.

Oh, speaking of the Distemper! My babies need that also - BOTH of them! They asked if I wanted to go ahead and get Tatum's today but I opted to wait since she was already whining and crying from them messing around with her ears, plus she was just scared to death (as she always is when she is at the vets office) my poor girl :( I always try and go easy with her and just do one thing at a time if at all possible - just to try and give her somewhat of a break :( They want to check her again in 2 weeks, so after that I will probably be taking both her and Stedman in for their shots.

I had no idea that Sissy had an infection there, that poor girl!! Does it bother her when she goes potty? I'm sure she was put on an antibiotic so hopefully that will help clear it up soon! Geez luweez, it seems like alot of our babies are all having some kind of issues going on!! :( Give her a big hugs for me! :hug:

Poor Tate :( I hope that stuff the vet gave you works. You know... They know Lola at our vet too... she was in a lot last year for all of her daredevil stunts lol. Last time I was there the vet was joking about her and all of the crazy things she came in for lol. Lola had a yeast infection in her ears and I cannot remember what the name of the ear drops they gave her... But it worked. It's clear-like so it may be the same one

Oh I hope so too! I am keeping my fingers crossed! :xfingers: LOL that is so funny about Lola and all of her little daredevil stunts...LOL. She sounds alot like Stedman!! :D I'm surprised that I am not in there more with him with the way he flys around the house like a little mad man :eek: but luckily, (and I BETTER NOT jinx myself by saying this!! :mad:) he never gets hurt :thumbup: The vet and I were joking around today about how much Tatum comes in...and I told him that I guess I had better just pack my bags and move in :rolleyes: LOL...I was telling him how Stedman is NEVER there, only for shots, but that Tatum is in there every other month it seems and he said that's usually the way it works :rolleyes: He said there are several people that come in that have more than one baby and alot of times it's just ONE of there babies (yes, he calls them "babies" too - it's so cute, LOL) that is ALWAYS in there. So luckily, I'm not the only one :p Thank GOD :rolleyes:

Here is a link to a homemade ear wash solution that cocker spaniel owners use. I've heard good results using it.....you might want to try? The ingredients are simple enough:

The ingredients you'll need are white vinegar, powdered boric acid, isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), and Betadine antiseptic solution. Generic versions of the Betadine are known as Povidone-Iodine, and those are fine, too. Just be sure not to use "Betadine Scrub", which is Betadine with a detergent added. What you want is "Betadine Solution" or generic "Povidone-Iodine Solution".

Poor little Tatum! I hope she gets better quickly. I have not used either of those meds. I did get another drop for Hot Rod when he had his ear infection. It seemed to work well, just seemed like we were giving it to him foreverrrrr.

For my own experience... Clavamox help but the infection always come back after a few months.. If your Baby over scratch, You can always temporary use the plastic cone that stop they from reaching there ears and scratch it.

Brownie was on Baytril After 2 or so day's he was already better. We still have the bottle & when i see him scratching i put them in for one day & it's all better
i also make sure there's no hair covering his earhole at All.

Regarding the distemper (and other vaccines as well) - please talk to your vet. There has been lots of movement on vaccination protocol. Once your baby completes two rounds of puppy shots and then gets the booster at about 1 1/2 years old, there is NO NEED TO VACCINATE AGAIN for distemper. Rabies is a 3 year vaccination. Bordatella is recommended if your pups are taken to a groomer or are boarded. Other than that, no other vaccinations are necessary - period!!!!!!

This was Angel's distemper booster, which is why I went ahead with it. She will get her 3 year Rabies in another 3 weeks. When asked about vaccinating Sissy, I told her I wasn't doing anything other than rabies and she had her booster last year. I discussed the "new" protocol that I had printed out from Dr. Susan Dodd and the discussions on the holistic sites I frequent. She was very supportive and said she agrees 100% that we are overvaccinating. She also told me the vet practice we go to does not allow the vets to discuss alternatives unless brought up and approached by the owner!!! She made a notation in our chart to send us 5 year reminders on distemper, which we will then refuse. The only vacinnation I may consider would be bordatella and only if we will be boarding (which I don't anticipate)!!!!!!!!!

Sissy doesn't appear to be in any pain. I just noticed the rash when I was grooming her Saturday. It was much worse today even. She was given just a topical ointment (that is okay if she licks) and if it doesn't clear it up, then we'll go back - same if I notice any blood in her urine.

Poor Tatum. I have used the ear drops from the vet and they seemed to clear it up pretty quickly. I know what you mean about the vet knowing you. I seriously think my vets are going to think I have that disease where you make your kids sick so you can take then to the doctors!!lol Hope Tatum feels better soon and can stay away from the vets for awile.
