Shadow is sick :( Hello I'm new here. Shadow is my newest furbaby and he's almost 10 weeks and is about 1.5 pounds. I have only had him for 1 week tomorrow. Here is my blog from my myspace account (I'm to lazy to type everything over again) Shadow had to go to the vet today because he wasn't eating nor drinking and he was sleeping all the time. He had runny poo Thursday night and ate Friday morning and that was the last time. I had to force water down him so he wouldn't get dehydrated and some syrup to keep his blood sugar up. This morning he wouldn't even eat so we took him up to the vet and they kept him for observation. At about 3 I get the phone call that he has Coccidia. He's on an antibiotic and and anti nausia med because of the antibiotic. They are also giving him an energy puppy food to help his energy levels. They said they would call later to give me an update. So I just got the update and they are going to keep him over night. He's not throwing up or anything but he's acting depressed and he's not wanting to eat on his own but he will eat if hand fed. I will get an update in the morning. My question is what age will I not have to be so worried about him catching this? |
I'm so sorry about your puppy! Here is a link that will tell you all about Coccidia Coccidia (Coccidiosis) in Dogs: A Cause of Diarrhea Good luck! |
Coccidia is usually only something they get as a puppy. The meds should clear it up. I'm sure the vet has checked, but if he also has Giardia (which he can get at any time), they sometimes become anorexic with it. If the vet was giving him an IV, he may not be hungry because of the fluids as well. Just keep enticing him to eat and keep Nutrical on hand just in case (is made specifically to keep blood sugar levels up and better than Karo syrup). Good luck with your baby!!!! |
You have received great answers. I just wanted to say, I am sorry your poor baby is sick. |
Update The vet called about an hour ago and he's still hangin in there. He's throwing up his food now but is making an attempt to drink. He's being injected with water under his skin to prevent him from going on an iv. Poor baby probably feels like a pin cushion by now:(. He's staying another 24 hours and I won't hear anything until tomorrow morning. Hopefully he will start to feel tons better so he can come home I'm really starting to miss him. |
I'm so sorry to hear that your baby is so sick...My yorkie had coccidia when he was a pup also, and he was very, very sick. We had to force feed him with a syringe for a little while and sometimes force water. We started giving him water with a touch of honey, and he started drinking on his own. This helped him get fluids and also keep him from becoming hypoglycemic. The coccidia in combination with a few other things caused him to be severely hypoglycemic to where he would walk like he was drunk and have severe symptoms etc. We later found out that he also had a liver condition at that time that made things even worse. It will all be okay in a few weeks. I think it took about 3 rounds of Albon to get rid of the coccidia in my yorkie. The important thing is to make sure that he eats and drinks. I had to force feed a very small amount every 1-2 hours for awhile because he refused to eat completely. This was to prevent him from having a hypoglycemic episode. |
So sorry your baby is sick. My Cali was like that. You just need to get the coccidia cleared up and feed him every few hours even at night. Hope he can come home tomorrow. |
What a bummer! Get a new puppy and then not even be able to cuddle with him. :getwell: wish to little Shadow. |
Update We have some great new!! Shadow gets to come home at 3 today!!! Hubby is a little freaked out because we don't know what the vet bill is but I don't care I'm going to get my furbaby back. |
Great news!!!! Keep us posted on how he is doing. |
