worried I am probably worrying unnecessarily, but I would like someone else's advice. Lola is 16 weeks and almost 2 lbs. I am still having to hand feed her Gerber Chicken baby food because that is all that she will eat! She has gained 5 oz in the last couple of weeks which my vet says is great, and we will slowly start trying to introduce her to puppy food, but for now she will eat nothing other than this baby food. She won't even try anything else - not even a single treat except for her Bully stick. Today her gums and color look great and when I go get her she plays with me, but most of the day she has just wanted to sleep (I gave her nutrical about 1 hr ago just to be sure). She is easily aroused and does play when she gets up. Can she just be having a "lazy" day if this seems to be all that is going on with her? She is eating the same as always, and is going to the bathroom fine. She has not had any problems with low sugars except once a month ago and since then has been perfect. Any opinions will be appreciated. |

I am not an expert in this area so I don't have any tried and true suggestions. I hope that the more experienced here will soon give you some help. Have you tried softening the kibble with home made chicken broth (no sodium) and then adding alittle of the baby food to that? Also try tiny little pieces of the boiled chicken added to the baby food. I hope you find a way to advance Lola to dog food but it sounds like you are a good mommy and taking good care of her. Good luck and keep us updated on Lola. |
It sounds like you are a wonderful yorkie mom. How lucky she is, but...there are a few things you might do to assure she grows up to be a strong healthy baby. You should talk to your vet about putting your baby on very good liquid vitamins. Try leaving dry food out all the time, my little one will eat the hard stuff like its gormet dining between meals. A lot of yorkies, especially small ones are run by eaters...You can also mix some soft puppy food with the chicken stick so she will eat it, even if fed by hand for a while:). Giving just protein is like putting your baby on the Adkins diet..it promotes burning of fat from muscle because there is no glucose or sugars for the body to burn. This sometimes causes weight loss and should be used a very short period of time.. All of us need a certain amount of fats, carbohydrates, etc. so we have healthy, shinny coats and lots of nutrients for strong, healthy bones development. I use the chicken sticks as a treat or for training, and your baby will learn that the treat comes after a meal. You are doing great, hang in there, but remember you are the mom and she is the pup...and mom's always know best! |
Thanks so much for your reply. I will definitely try that. It was obviously just a lazy day for her as she did great yesterday and is doing fine this morning. She is just so small, that anything she does different tends to worry me! Thank goodness for you all and all of these threads that I can refer to. I appreciate all of the caring advice I have gotten. |
The vitamins might be a good idea. I'm not sure of what you could do exactly, but just wanted to say that you are doing the best thing by paying attention and monitoring her habits. She sounds like a sweet little peanut! |
