Baby has continuous diarrhea - help!
 

A few weeks ago my baby had pretty bad diarrhea and we took her to the vet. They checked for parasites- which were negative and gave her some medication to help with the loose stool. It worked great and her stool became normal again, until we stopped giving her the medication.
It seems the medication is only covering up the problem until she gets off it. This had happened now a few times, but I dont want to just keep covering up the issue while she is on the medication.

Help! Im not sure what the continuous diarrhea is caused from. Any ideas?

Probably a good idea to visit the vet again. Warmly, Deborah PS Check the stool for segments of tape worms.

I would either have your vet run more tests or get a second opinion. Some of the parasites can be hard to find in the stool samples. Good luck.

Sweet potato will firm up the poop but I agree that you need to find out the origin of her problems.

I agree with the others...that another visit to the vet is probably best. It could be they missed something. Some parasites can be missed and some are hard to find in the stool sample.

Your babies problems sound much like what I went through with Maddie when she was younger. She would be on flagyl and shortly after finishing up the meds, she'd get it again. My vet diagnosed her with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and put her back on flagyl for a time, and then had me very slowly wean her off the med. That worked and she didn't get the diarrhea back.

I know what you are going through. My baby Shyloh has diarrhea, vomiting, and will not eat a thing. She looks emaciated and I don't know what else to do... A friend a work says that the only thing that will cure her yorkie for all of this going on is a combo of antibiotics and Hills Prescription Diet i/d canine canned food. This can only be bought from a vet or online pharmacy. I have tried the bland diets, eggs, imodium, and nothing seems to help. Any advice is appreciated???

What are u feeding your baby? I had this problem with Abby every week she would have a diahhera problem. She would be at the vet 3 times a month getting different type of tests and medicine. The vet had no idea what it was and I took it upon myself to change her diet. The last straw was when she has bloody diahhera. I started to giver freeze dried raw and I have not had a bout with diahhera and loose stolls in about 3 months THANK GOD.

You can also possibly see if she is allergic to the type of food u are giving her. I know allergy tests are expensive but its worth a try. Just try to see what works I know its hard and stressful but it will work out.

i would see the vet again. i had great luck feeding rice w/broth to stop the runs.

This happened to Buddy when he was one.
It went on for almost four months. I would put him on chicken and rice
it would clear up and I would try another food, per my vet. I finally
gave up, he lost two pounds and I changed vet's because the first one
only kept changing his food, stools looked normal when tested.
The new vet said he would start with worming him. At times a male
parasite can be picked up and settle in the intestines causing problems
and stool samples will not show eggs because male parasites don't
produce eggs! Within 24hrs Buddy had a normal stool and has been
healthy every since. That was three years ago and I stayed with that
vet. Have him wormed by your vet. Good luck, I hope this helps you.
Believe me I was so happy when the nighmare finally ended and it only
took switching vet's.

It sounds a little like Giardia to me. It is a separate test so maybe that is why it did not show up. I had the exact same problem with Ralphie and my vet finally tested specifically for the Giardia. Ralphie has been on 3 different medications for it and he is starting his 4th and hopefully final one today. I am sooo sorry about your baby, I know what your going through. Was he ever tested for Giardia?

How old is this baby? What tests were run? Was he tested for Giardia and if so, how many times? What meds, exactly, is/was he on? What, exactly, are you feeding? What is the diarrhea like and is it constant? Any blood? Tummy noises?

Here is a link to the meds they prescribed for Zoeybear's diarrhea. I spent over $300.00 , x-ray, blood panel, exam, parasite exam etc. They found nothing. NO explaination of her diarreah. It does seem to be getting better after almost a week. She has been passing blood at times too. If it doesnt clear by Friday, we are going in for more x-rays with Barrium. The one thing they did find was some "tennis ball fuzz" in her stool. Maybe it irritated her bowel? The only thing is that Baby Chloe has it too. We threw out all the tennis balls. I have been washing butts for days!!!!! This med did seem to help, maybe someone can get some relief until your diagnosis is confirmed. Good luck,your sister in poo!!!!:love: I feel your pain!!!

Hi Everyone, thanks for all the responses!!! Well I went to the vet again today with both of my girls. Mia is 3.7 and Shyloh is 4.9. Shylohs visit at the vet on Friday (5 days ago) she weighed in at 5.5 so that is how much the diarrhea and did I mention vomiting is causing. I was up all night with the poor child vomiting. Guess what... Mia started it today too..so I just took both to the vet again. The doctor said their hydration was good so no fear, no parvo, just a bug according to him...So now they are both on antibiotics, vomit and poo meds, and they both got a shot (ouch) they cried and so did mom...(I have spent over $500 in 5 days on them). If this clears up then I will need to work on Shylohs aggression problem (did I mention that?) Yes she is biting my husband and children although they spoil her rotten. She has not bitten me yet...She barks soooo much at strangers and kids that I get embarrased. Does anyone struggle with this??? We love to go camping and take all the girls (2 human, 2 yorkie) but Shyloh goes nuts!!!

I forgot to let rebecca127 know that I feed them Royal Canine dry food, however, the vet recommended I take them off of everything except boiled chicken for now until the diarrhea clears. Let me know what you all think??? Thanks Lisa, Danville VA

I hope your baby is ok. My Lulu has had the same problem off and on for the last 2 months. Her stomach would growl very loudly for long periods of time and her stool was very very runny. They ran a test for parasites and giardia and both came back negative. Her Dr. prescribed flagyl which seemed to clear the problem up after 10 days or so. I took her off of the bland diet of chicken and rice (which she doesn't do very well on because of severe food and inhalent allergies). Anyway, I put her back on the NV raw frozen diet which has been perfect for her. Up until now, things were normal. Now she won't even eat the raw food. I tried a different batch thinking it might be contaminated but she still won't eat it. After I hand fed her it on saturday, she vomited about 8 times. I took her to the vet and they said her temp was fine and to keep an eye on her. Sunday, she only had 1 bowel movement and it was very small (she usually has 3 and they are always very firm). Monday her bm was covered in a yellow mucous and there was alot of it. Has your baby had that? Today it is very very loose and you can see that the food is undigested in it. I am taking the stool sample to the vet, but I am sure it will come back negative for parasites and giardia like it did the last time. Like you, I feel like the meds are just hiding the actual problem. What kind of food does your baby eat? What was the name of the medicine and how long did you use it for? Lulu's Dr. told me to give the flagyl for 7 to 10 days, stop for 2 or 3 days and then give it for another 5 days whether the stool is still loose or not. That worked the first time this happened, but now it's back. Maybe you will have better luck. Also, he prescribed "Tylen Powder" to be given with the Flagyl. He said they work well together. Let me know if you get to the root of the problem. It sounds like we are having the same issues. It's very frustrating. In the last 3 months I have spent over $1500 in vet bills (between the allergist, the regular vet, an internist, and the emergency room -- a 3am visit because of blood in the stool, it totally freaked me out!). The vet also told me to feed very small meals all day long instead of 3 meals a day like she usually gets. How many times a day does your baby eat? At one point this did help with the diarrhea, but who knows, it could have just been the meds kicking in. It's worth a try though. Best of luck. I pray your baby gets back to normal.

Hi! Thanks for caring, it is nice to know there are people out there to talk to! One shot of vomitting med. and liquid antibiotics has done the trick! She is back to normal, thank goodness! A lady I work with who has yorkies and knows her stuff swears to me that once a year her baby Molly gets the same thing and the antibiotics is the only thing that will clear it up. She has gotten to the point where she just calls the vet once a year when it starts to buy the medicine without the expense of a vet bill. I rather do that than see Shyloh in misery. As far as the food goes...a yorkietalk member gave me this recipe in which I will share with you. My girls have loved it even though it is gross to us!!!

I make a batch once a month and freeze in qt. size zip-loc bags.

6 pounds of ground meat such as bison, beef or lamb. You can take two of each
or however you want to use them. And 3 containers of chicken livers.
8 large fresh carrots
2 cups of brown rice
1cup of split peas
1cup of lentils

Put rice peas and lentils in boiling water and cook till just crisp tender.
Cook the meat in a dry skillet. Chop fine the carrots. (cook carrots or leave raw) Mix all together and
place in Zip-loc bags and freeze. I use 1/4 cup of this mixture per pup twice a day.
You can even use a bit less than 1/4 cup if you want to add 1/4 boild egg and a little
cooked oats. I use the steel cut oats. Or you can add either tuna, salmon or
sardines.

This recipe feeds my three for a month. I then add Healthy powder to their
breakfast each morning.

Thanks for the recipe and info. I may try switching food if the problem keeps coming back. Right now, things seem to be back to normal. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Glad to hear your baby is feeling better.

How old is your Yorkie? My puppy is 3 months old and I think she has been showing some agression too. My daughters tell me that she is just "being a puppy" but it worries me. Have never had an agressive dog and don't want one now. Wondered if your Yorkie was a puppy or if she is older.

Lulu is 3 years old. How is your puppy showing signs of aggression? When Lulu was a puppy she had a ton of energy and she did knaw at my hands a lot but that was because she was a puppy and they chew when they are young. I'm sure your puppy will outgrow it. I think yorkies in general are very protective. Lulu just doesn't seem to like men in uniforms, like the mailman or the fed-ex man. She will bark and lunge at them, but has never bitten anyone. She is a very loving dog. When I first got Lulu, I was very overwhelmed. All she did was knaw, and run around. She never even sat on my lap until around a month and a half after I got her. After the first week, I thought about selling her because I didn't think we were bonding at all. A friend reminded me that she was just being a puppy and that she would settle down. I decided to give it a couple more weeks until I made my decison on whether or not to keep her. I'm so glad my friend made that suggestion. Lulu brings me so much joy and makes me laugh every day. Give it some time. I think your puppy will settle down, just be very strict with obedience training and making sure that your puppy knows early on that you are the boss. Good luck.

Sounds to me like your dog is allergic to a chemical or something in its food. I would stop feeding any food in your house. Go get yourself some organic chicken a sweet potato and a can of green beans. Cook them all up cut up and see if this changes anything. I would start there.... good luck to you and your baby.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually did a food elimination diet along with getting her tested for allergies. She is now on a raw food diet and I found out that she is allergic to around 58 different things from many different grasses and trees to certain bugs and even human dander! It turns out that she is very sensitive and her stomach isses were caused from meds she was taking for a bacterial and yeast infection on her skin. These infections are quite common in dogs with allergies and in her case they are chronic. I now apply topical lotions to her daily instead of oral meds and the stomach issues have cleared up. That along with baths 3 times a week seem to keep it under control. I have also started giving her allegy shots with hopes that it will at least make things a little more managebale and provide her with a little more relief since antihistamines don't work at all. Definitley a lot of work, but worth it if it helps her.

I live in Bronx, NY can I get you doctors # - I have changed my dogs diet, meds, testings, doctors, flooring, rugs and other things trying to figure out who will give me a solution to my dogs stool problems. I could probably count how many stools of his have been solid. Runnin, salavia looking blood in stool from time to time. Meds helped temporarily and diet change hasnt worked. Believe it or not I have been feeding him a combo of dog food and homemade. I boil potatoes, carrots, sweet potato, rice and sometimes chicken mixed with dog food which has jelped his running stool but not fully. Please HELP!!

What tests have been done, what meds have been tried and if this started as an adult, has an intestinal bipsy been done?

Sorry to hear your dog is having problems. If you haven't tried a raw food diet yet, you might have some luck with it. I give lulu Natures Variety Raw rabbit and venison. She loves them both and her stools are always well formed. Never loose when she is in good health. If you decide to try it, I suggest you slowly incorporate it into your dogs diet. A quick change could result in stomach issues and loose stools. I also supplement the raw meat with a mixture of brussels sprouts, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower and a clove of garlic, which I puree in a food processor. She absolutely loves it. Once your dog's health is back to normal, you might have luck with adding coconut oil to the diet. Go slowly with that though. Too much can make your dog (as well as humans) very sick. I only give a teaspoon a day. Coconut oil is know for balancing out any issues with the immune system. Very healing. These things seemed to have helped my dog, but your case may be different. Wait until you see a doctor. I recommend Dr. Donna Spector. She is a veternary internist. 212-213-9885 She deals with IBS in pets, etc. I have only been to her once (Lulu's problem was due to colitis and once that cleared up, she was fine. There was no need to go back). I would go to her instead of a regular vet because she specializes in this stuff. I've seen her get interviewed by Ellen DeGeneres so I would say she's pretty respected in her field. Good luck and I hope your dog gets back to good health quickly.

You might want to wait until you see the doctor before you change the diet. Changes in diet can also cause chages in the digestive system, so it might be better to keep your dog consistent with his food and the doctor can better gage what is going on.
