Luxating Patella Hello, This is my first time on this forum but I was thirlled to see there was a yorkie forum. My dog Roxie had her second patella surgery done on her right knee today. She had her left knee done last year at this time. Her left knee healed beautifully and we were able to take the pin out and it doesn't even look like surgery was performed. I was just interested to see if anyone else has had this surgery performed. She is only 3 and her walking has never been quite right even since she was little. I could tell the past few weeks has been hard on her and I am just hoping this will really help her and she will be able to live the rest of her life painfree. Has anyone else had this surgery done and has it made a big difference?? |
My Maltese, Codie, had his left knee operated on. I've never seen him more energetic or happy since! Now I can't get him to sit still for one minute! :D I'm so happy I had this done. I see a definite improvement in the "quality" of his life. I would definitely recommend this surgery to anyone whose dog is suffering from LP. |
Linus has LP, and while he hasn't had his surgery yet, our vet said to get it done when his gets bad enough to warrant it. I was told that a lot of the problems that they have would disappear after the surgery, and they will have, as Jennifer said, a better quality of life. I hope the post-op goes well for your baby! |

My Maltese had three knee surgeries. She was young also. She seems fine, no pain, but her one knee still slips a little. So, I'm wondering if later, down the road she will end up with arthritis, because of the slipping. If you don't get the knees fixed, they will end up with terrible arthritis later in life. She's eight years old now. I got her from a pet store before I understood about pet stores and it has cost me dearly. She also had a hernia repair. But she has the sweetest most loving personality of any dog I've ever seen! ;) |
My dog Roxie, who just had the knee surgery, also has a hernia. She has had it for a few years now and it doesn't bother her. The doctor said that the surgery is optional but if it doesn't seem to bother her then don't worry about it. Was your dog bothered by the hernia? |
hernia I think my vet advised fixing it since she would be "under" anyway. I can't remember if it bothered her, really. She doesn't really show when she's in pain.(no whinning or crying). But, it bothered me, that it was there. :) |
Lp Sorry to hear about your little angel. I have an 11 year old female yorkie who has had the surgery twice. She's fine and can outrun our 5 year old male. It is critical however that you keep her quiet during the recovery stage. My little gal wanted to be running and jumping up on furniture the day after surgery. It was a constant struggle to keep her quiet but well worth the end results. |
i think my puppy has it too I'm so happy to have found this link. My puppy is 4 months old, after i took him to the vet, the vet told me he has Patella Luxation on his hind leg, which the groove is too shallow, the patella will slip out when the knee bends. I was disappointed because my supposedly reputable breeder failed to inform me when i got him. I don't want to return my puppy since we're already bonded. Today, we suddenly see him started limping when he was running. it went away in a minute. He wasn't in pain i think. I wonder if this condition will get any worse. Does anyone have this issue with their yorkie? I'm very worried. For those of you whose baby had surgery done, how bad was the condition before you decide to undergo the surgery to fix it? |
Wow, only 4 months old and already limping. You should at least ask the breeder for some money back to help with the surgery costs. Yorkies are known for knee problems however most don't have symptoms until they are older. The youngest I've experienced has been three years old and she never exhibited any symptoms at all. Just woke up one day and couldn't walk. Normally I don't consider surgery until the dog is in pain or having difficulty walking, running, jumping. In your case I'd take her back to the vet ASAP as her condition sounds critical. I'm not sure what surgery costs will be in the USA, here in Canada I paid $1,200.00 per knee. |
Is it my fault? Zoe just went for her annuals and the Vet told me she has LP. I had no clue, she doesn't limp. He said she will eventually need surgery. Did I cause this? Her breathing has been heavier lately. It sounds like she has a stuffy nose. Any idea what might cause this? Any advice is appreciated! |
Lp Hello, My Wife And I Have A Yorky Who Is 1 Yr Old On The 30th Of This Month. We Noticed About 5 Days Ago That Mai Was Limping On Her Rear Right Leg, I Took Mai To The Vets Yesterday And They Have Give Her Some Anti Inflammatory Drugs....i Really Hope This Helps. I Find It Really Strange How One Minute Mai Can Be Jumping Around And Playing With Our Other Older Yorky And Then Next Minute Limping And At The Same Time Her Tail Is Still Wagging, As It Appears That Mai Does Not Feel Any Pain At All. Mai Weighs Only 2kg And If She Does Need The Operation I Have Concerns About The Effects Of The Anaesthetic On Such A Young/small Dog. Has Anyone Decided Not To Opt For Surgery? Could This Problem Get Better As The Dog Gets Older? Rgds Jacko :d |
