legg-perthes disease Hi, can anyone give me information for caring for my baby girl after orthopaedic surgery? I have heard this is a common problem for yorkies. Millie is 7 months old and is having the surgery this morning ,this is quite sudden as diagnosis was only 4 days ago . my vet wanted to do the surgery asap as millie was not putting weight on her leg. |
Legg Perthes surgery is not a real invasive surgery. Your dog will probably take antibiotics and pain killers after surgery. You will need to do some stretching excercises with them also to help loosen up the leg. It will take a few weeks for them to start to use the leg and several months before they use it 100 percent. Mine was up and wanting to play the next day so I dont think they are in a whole lot of pain after surgery but you wont want them to be running and jumping and it was hard for me to keep him from doing that even after surgery. |
Here is some information about the disease and a couple numbers you could call for more information on recovery time. Legg Perthes Disease |
How is Millie doing? I hope the surgery went well. |

My Brea did ok after the surgery - she was 7 months old when she had hers. She is 16 months now and still does not use her leg all the time. Usually it is when she is outside and wants to go fast. For sure do the PT with her after the surgery. Hope things go well for you.:) |
that is wonderful news! I hope she continues to improve quickly and before you know it she'll be up and running! |
