HELP!! Abbey is sick!! I'm so worried right now! I took Abbey to the vet earlier to get shots and she got a rabies shot. It's been about 2 hours and now she is vomitting non stop, acting weird, and just not being herself. I know this may just be a reaaction to the shot, but I'm very worried. What should I do? She's never acted like this before she is all sad looking won't move, just stays in one spot. Please help, I'm very worried and I have never gone through this before... Has this happened to anyone else before, is illness after shots normal? |
Call the vet right away...if they aren't open anymore find an emergency 24 hour clinic...also I heard that scrambled eggs help with upset stomachs...hope that helps a little...keep us posted |
I could understand maybe being tired and not moving much, but the vomiting worries me. I would call the vet. |

I called the vet and she told me to give her a quarter teaspoon of children's benadryl. I'm worried to give it to her bc she is only 3 pounds but the vet said it would help. She said the shot should not make her vomit but it may have just been the excitement of the vet and the whole ordeal. I feel like this is not normal though bc she got the exact same shots she had last time but she did not get sick last time. |
Ive heard puppies getting sick after shots a lot. Def. call a vet... make sure shes getting plenty of water and i would give her some nitrical just to make sure her sugar stays up. Keep us posted |
Did she get just the rabies or others too? I'd call the vet ASAP!!!! |

I will be praying for your little girl. Usually the rabies shot is given separately and not with other shots. She is so little I would really be worried. The rabies shot can be really hard on them. |
Sending up lots of prayers for your baby. Rabies shots should NEVER be given in combination with other shots. I'd get to a vet with her like RIGHT NOW! Please keep us posted. |

I was looking over the receipt they gave us and it also said she had been given a deworming treatment. I'm confused about this bc Abbey does not have worms...Is it normal to give her a deworming treatment even if she does not have worms?? |
It sounds like an awful lot was done to one so little at one time. I would call your vet, or a vet. I hope everything is going to be okay... |
One the first things the vet should have asked you to check was facial swelling and to CHECK THE GUMS - are they pink or are they white? They should be pink - and when you press on them - they should turn white for a sec. and then quickly return to pink - do they? |

ALSO, get a small bowl of water - put Karo syrup or honey or sugar in it to sweeten the water - have her drink it ASAP. |
Is she disoriented? Will she follow a toy with her eyes if you move the toy around? |

She is drinking lots of water and keeping it down. She did just play a little with a toy and followed it and did not seem disoriented...just a little slower then usual. But I did give her benadryl and the shots were also making her tired so right now she is fast asleep. I will keep watching her and let you all know how she is doing. |

Glad you gave her the benedryl...it will help if she is having a reaction. Sometimes they don't get a reaction with the first shots...so next time she gets them, have them give her a shot of the bendryl first. That will help if she should have another reaction. Keep an eye on her and if her gums don't go back to pink, take her in right away!!! |
I would definitely consider looking for an alternate vet for your baby. |

I was already considering changing bc I don't like her anyways. The office always seems dirty, she's always short with me and doesn't explain things. I'm definitely changing but it is so hard bc I don't know how to go about finding one I really like. |
How is she doing? Are you going to take her to see a vet tonight or tomorrow? |
Hope your baby is filling better. Wylie's Mom- Great advice!!!:thumbup: |
I'm sorry it took me so long to post this, it has been a very hectic weekend. First off, Abbey is doing great! We had quite a scare with her on Friday. After the vomitting, we gave her benadryl and encouraged her to drink water bc her gums were so white. After that she fell asleep for a long time and woke up acting like her usual self! Her gums were back to normal and she was playing and running around and eating and drinking. Phew. I was so scared. On Saturday she was super sore in the area where the shot was given and would cry if we touched it. Otherwise, everything was fine. I plan on calling the vet on Monday and giving her a piece of my mind for giving my 3 pound dog such a harsh combination of shots. Everywhere I looked and everyone I have talked to has said that rabies should NOT ever be given in combination with other shots. How could my vet not have known this?? I'm def switching, one of my friends recommended another vet that is further out of town and more expensive but he said she is wonderful and very caring of the animals first and foremost. I just want to thank all you YTer's who offered advice and support!! It really meant a lot and it really helped me a lot. I feel so lucky to have found this community where everyone is so knowledgeable and caring. And a special thank you to Wylie's Mom!! Your advice really helped and was actually WAY better advice than my vet was giving me!! It honestly brings tears to my eyes, that complete strangers would offer their help and support to a pup they don't even know! But Abbey is greatful and so am I. |
I am so glad Abbey is doing better. You Got great advice. |
Glad she's better. Using a vet you trust is priceless |
