Annual Shots
 

Sadie went in Tuesday for her rabies vaccine, DHLPP+Corona (Adult) Booster shots.

She was fine all evening.

The next day she was very lethargic, which the vet's office assured me was normal. This morning, she vomited at 3:00, so I let her outside to potty, and then she shook a little so I wrapped her back up in blankets.

Today, she is much better but still acts like her joints ache. She wants to be picked up when crossing the threshold at the bottom of the door, which has just a tiny step on it.

Do any of you experience problems like this with your kids when you bring them home from having their shots?

The good news is that I don't need to take her in for a booster shot now for three years, just the annual rabies shot.

I am not looking forward to her getting her teeth cleaned in two weeks, because this is another situation in which she is terribly lethargic for the day and a half after the procedure. In a way though, I think this may be the better procedure of the two, because I don't think having her teeth cleaned makes her joints ache. I feel like I purposely gave her the flu.

It is so pathetic so watch her, but the nurse assured me she will be OK.

Do they need another rabies shot? I thought it was only one, don't know where I got that info. Sammy is 13 mos. old. I need to take him soon.

Sadie got bombarded with shots! No wonder she was lethargic.

Toy breed dogs can get very bad, even life threatening reactions to both Lepto (the "L" in her shot) and corona. For that reason we don't like to give them unless there is a lepto outbreak in your area. In that case, they should be given separately from the rest of the vaccinations several weeks later, never in a combo shot like Sadie got. (Fort Dodge makes a single lepto vaccine).

Rabies should always be given separately from the rest of the vaccines due to possible reaction.

It doesn't sound like your vet is very knowledgable about toy breeds. You will have to insist on a safer schedule next time. You were very lucky.

Last year Sadie came home lethargic, and I discussed this with the receptionist before taking her in this year. She said being sleepy is something that happens with the small breeds, and that it is pretty common. She did say they could give her separate shots, but did not think it was necessary.
Now, I feel horrible, and I will be calling the vet's office again tomorrow, just to be sure notes are put in Sadie's file.

I feel horrible about this, and by reading your post, she was probably much worse than I thought.

Sadie is 3 yrs and Lille will be 2 yrs in June. Sadie got all her shots as a puppy (Lillie did too) I don't feel they need shots every year. I brought them to the vets Wed and had titers done. Lillie couldn't have hers because she needs her rabies and I didn't want to to get it unless I could be home to watch her incase of a reaction (I have a friend who's yorkie had a bad reaction to the rabies) small dogs shouldn't get the Lepto shot. I would discuss, with your vet, having a titer done the next time she is due for shots.

What is a titer? A blood test of some sort?

I always schedule her appts. on a Monday or a Tues., just in case she gets ill.
I do this even when I get her teeth cleaned. I live in a small town, and nobody is open on the weekends if Sadie gets ill.

Corona really shouldn't be given at all.
Besides the increased risk of reaction to all those shots, giving that many at once can negate immunity...

I am doing my homework, this time.

My vet said next time to get the booster and rabies shots separately.

Another vet's office said to not give her the Lepto, as many small dogs have bad reactions to this shot.

Luckily, the won't need another rabies shot for three years.

One vet said she had a reaction to the Lepto/Corona portion of the shot, more than likely, while my own vet's office said the reaction was probably to the rabies shot.

Like I said, I am in the process of researching all of this.

Crystal - I am going to have to take Lucy for her shots next month. Her shots have to be kept current since she travels so much internationally with me. Do you know the minimum I can get away with? Also, what do you think of the Lepto? Is that a bad one? Thanks for your help.

i have a question. my augie was born 12/26/07, got dpv on 2/19, 3/17 & 4/7, I also did lepto on 4/7 but we are not going to do the booster(we have since decided not to do lepto at all). He should be done with the DPV right? He has rabies coming up 4/28.

But Abby, his sister, had DPV on 3/17 & 4/7 (also lepto). She is due for rabies & DPV. How long between getting DPV should she wait for the Rabies?

You should be aware that by combining shots at one visit, you not only increase the likelihood of an adverse reaction, but you also increase the likelihood that the vaccine components will interfere with one another and neutralize or negate the immunological response. Dr. Ronald Schultz of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine states that the rabies vaccine should never been given with any other vaccines.

October-December 2007, Vol. 26, #3 Journal of American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, Summary of a Presentation by Dr. Ron Schultz written by Patricia Monahan Jordan, DVM, "Rabies is also the vaccine most likely to lead to an ADVERSE EVENT.....You should NEVER give Rabies at the same time as the other vaccines."

Vaccination Options/Prevention It should be noted that giving vaccine more frequently than every 2 weeks will cause interference between the two vaccines and neither can be expected to be effective. This includes giving vaccines for different infections. Vaccines should be spaced 2-4 weeks apart.

Combination Vaccines, Multiple Shots--on Page 16 of the[i 2003 AAHA Guidelines[/i] under Immunological Factors Determining Vaccine Safety, it states that: "Although increasing the number of components in a vaccine may be more convenient for the practitioner or owner, the likelihood for adverse effects may increase. Also, interference can occur among the components. Care must be taken not to administer a product containing too many vaccines simultaneously if adverse events are to be avoided and optimal immune responses are sought. "

You might also be interested in an important piece of information from the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital to consider when deciding on an appropriate vaccination booster protocol for your dogs.

Small Animal Vaccination Protocols The USDA requires challenge data two weeks after last vaccination for licensure for all vaccines (except rabies). The USDA does not require titers or challenge data at one year for any vaccine except for rabies vaccines. Manufacturers yearly vaccine recommendations are arbitrary for all but rabies vaccines.

This is scary, and it is good to know that the two different vaccines should be given at least 2 - 4 weeks apart.

My little girl is still not up to par, and this makes me sad.

Perhaps you should get a second opinion from a homeopathic/holistic veterinarian, you might find they can help. A titer is a blood test. They check to see if they have built up immunity to the shots they have been given. I feel they don't need them every year. We don't' get shots every year. I just don't feel it's good for them. JMO

I don't know about your vet but, mine sends out reminders when the shot is due. If they don't do that I would ask your vet. They keep records and would be able to tell you when and what is due.

I will check this out. I live in a very small, a three hour drive from Seattle, WA, but I bet they would have a vet of this type.

I absolutely, positively hate the lepto vaccine. I am not saying not to give it but I feel that it is extremely dangerous to small dogs and should only be given when it is absolutely necessary AND there is no history of reaction to it. You should wait for 20-30 minutes at the vet office after it is given and it should be given separately from all other shots. I think Pfizer makes one. Fort Dodge isn't on my good list right now.

This vaccine is way over used and is only necessary in certain areas. Just make sure the benefit outweighs the risk before giving it in your area of the country.

I have no idea about international vaccinations laws and it is probably good that I don't because if I did, it would make me very upset to see how many vaccines they insist our dogs get.

My newest puppy has been sick he had so much going on, took him to the park, he had his vaccines 9 week old, he had coccidia when I got him, my daughter dropped him out of her arms he landed on a rock on his side. he only fell 1 foot but still falling for a little yorkie is bad, he wasn't hurt too bad but he yelped upon falling, he got up and ran right back into her arms.
He recently was hospitalized for bloody diarrhea and vomiting. His albumin was low so he was given Plasma proteins, upon picking him up on Monday and taking him to my regular vet his blood was drawn for further work up and a BAT he is only 11 weeks old. It was elevated.
He was given further plasma on Monday went home that night and I took him back the next day. He is eating and energetic.
I have always listened to my vet about getting the vaccines. I live on 2 acres of land where my dogs can run all over.
he didn't think these problems were brought on by the vaccines. He was getting fed eukanuba and I was switching him over to Royal canin food.
I just lost one yorkie May 5th and I am so nervous this one is sick. My daughter cried thinking he would need surgery for Liver shunt? I know time will tell. The vet was trying to figure out why the episode of vomiting and diarrhea where it sprang up from. I have talked to the breeder and she informed me she has never had a puppy ill like this from the two parents. she is terribly concerned.
I have appreciated getting the information in which is provided here on this forum. It has enriched my knowledge and helped ease my concerns.

While it could be liver shunt, the bile acids are going to be elevated right now after giving vaccines and your pup being sick.

What were the results?

I got this pup on 5-16-08 and he was given DHLP-P-C ON 5/17 AND 6/06 AT MY VET'S OFFICE.
He has had coccidia and campuli bacter. I am wondering if his bought with the bloody diarrhea and vomitting is from getting the vaccines?

According to a presentation entitled Avoiding Vaccine Reactions in Dogs and Cats by Dr. Craig E. Greene at the 2003 World Small Animal Veterinary Association, Avoiding Vaccine Reactions - WSAVA 2003 Congress,

"Immunologic reactions that can develop following vaccination can be categorized as to the four classical types of hypersensitivity reactions. Type I reactions involve an interaction with cytophilic IgE and antigen with resultant degranulation of circulating basophils and tissue mast cells. In the dog, signs are facial edema, hypotensive shock, weakness, dyspnea and diarrhea."

It is certainly a possibility that he experienced an adverse reaction to vaccination. I hope he's better.

We gave Syd all of the puppy shots recommended by our breeder and vet. He had his rabies at another time. I informed our vet when we first brought Syd in for his initial set of shots that we would not be filling him full of vaccines every year. Before he has anymore vaccinations we will do a bloood titer first to determine if the vaccines already in his system are still protecting.
