Site of Neuter hard and red Hi all. Maverick just got neutered 8 days ago. Everything has been fine and I've checked him over and over and he hasn't had any problems. It was a little red yesterday but nothing big. I just looked at it a few minutes ago and touched it and it is hard and red right where his stitches are. Is that normal? I mean it's not bright red just a little bit but it's hard?? I'm waiting for the vet to call right now just wanted to see what you guys thought. |
It could be scar tissue forming - but, I'd get it looked at, just to be sure nothing funky is going on. I mean, you don't want an overly large "bundle" of scar tissue forming - bc sometimes later those little bundles can cause issues. :) |
This happened to Spike and it ended up being an slight infection at the incision site. The way it was explained to me was that when they do the stitches after the surgery, they tie a knot at the end of the thread which takes longer to dissolve, and as such, is more prone to developing infection or becoming inflamed. Anyway, Spike went to the vet and was given a week's worth of antibiotics. He was fine after a day or so, but I made sure to give him the entire prescription to make sure it cleared up properly. You might also want to put some Polysporin (or similar antibiotic cream) on the red bump. That's what I did before I took him to the vet, and she said it certainly wouldn't hurt to keep doing it until it cleared up. |
If he had dissolvable sutures it could also be a suture granuloma forming but only 8 days post-op it is most likely an infection. |
Scooter did the same thing. When I took him in, the vet said that one of the stitches did not dissolve because he was so small and it was infected. He removed that stitch and put him on antibiotics. Please let the vet take a look at him. |
