choking or seizure? Yesterday, I got home and went outside with my 6 month old, Sammy. He has a blue rubber ball that has wholes in it. He likes to stand on it and "smush" it to get a better grip in his mouth before he runs back with it. He did this yesterday and then dropped the ball. His body was moving like he was trying to throw up. Suddenly he got in to the grass, his head went back, and his body was stiff. I freaked and screamed "Lord Jesus help", picked him up, and reached in to his mouth into his throat to get whatever I thought he was choking on out. I pulled out either phlem or bile (because he didn't have anything in his stomach to throw up) I thought he was choking on. He began breathing again and in a few minutes, took him inside to eat some wet dog food. He did and has been fine ever since. He does this sort of coughing thing sometime which gets better when he drinks water. I put up the ball. Are Yorkies prone to seizures? Could this have been what it was? I'm taking him to the vet next week. Anyone had this happen? SCARRY!!! |
Sounds like a very scary experience...sounds more like some type of choking to me. But I could definitely be wrong. Happy to hear all is okay now. Give Sammy an extra hug and kiss from Winston and I. |
What a scare. Poor baby. Sounds like a choking epsiode possibly. The only experience I have with seizures is when my older pom had one a few months ago. It was so horrible. She let out a weird howl/scream was kind of thrashing around, then went stiff and we thought she was dead, then a few minutes later she started to move her front legs then her back legs and then woke up. The er vet said she had a grand mal seizure. It took her hours to get back to normal. I hope it wasn't a seizure. |
Usually, when they have a seizure they stiffen up and shake and pee and poop on themselves. Brooke had a few of these. It sounds like it was some kind of choking incident. So scary and hope it was just a one time thing! |
My lady is an epileptic and what you describe could be a seizure. Seizures in a dog less than one year old are usually a symptom of hypoglycemia or a liver shunt. Have you had a bile aids test done on him? Yorkies are thirty-six times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined. Dr. Center recommends that all Yorkie puppies have a bile acids test before going to their new home. Hopefully it was just a one time choking episode, but do make sure he has a BAT just to be sure. |
