Medications; Need Some Insight/Help Please Hi Everyone, I have a female yorkie who is 9 1/2 years old. My yorkie has allergies/ trouble sleeping at night so my Vet who I saw yesterday suggested I give childrens Benadryl liquid nightly to take care of the 2 problems. Rather than sedate her every night with a sedative; since her allergies make her nose drip and she licks her nose to catch the drainage; so much that it is drying out her nose. So He advised putting a little vaseline and rubbing it in her nose so it stays moist which I have been doing. My question is she is 7 1/2 pounds how much of a children's liquid Benadryl dose would I give her of the childrens's Benadryl Liquid at night. He said what ever it says for 7 lbs. but they go by the age of the child and not pounds on the Benadryl Box. Any suggestions??? Also I need a recommendation for a arthritis supplement for my Yorkie is there any holistic or recommended brands that you use for your Yorkies; please let me know. Sorry this is so long. I am not sure what the dosage is but hopefully someone who knows will post. Did you try doing a search on Benydry it might be in a post. I will look too |
I found this. Hope it helps My vet told me to give 1mg per pound too. Childrens Benadryl is 12.5mg per 5ml. 5ML=1tsp. A ml is the same as a cc. If your pup weighs 3.4lbs she should get 3.4mg which equals to 1.36ml or 1.36cc or you could round it off to 1.4ml using a syringe. __________________ |
Flexicose is often given to dogs who have joint problems - I get mine on eBay; I give it to Wylie for his knees. These allergies that we see now in dogs is just unreal - and so sad! I hope the Benadryl gives some relief. And, WELCOME to YT - you'll find a lot of support here. :D |
My Britain has Allergies too. She is sneezing and sniifeling all day and night. I never thought aboutt the vaseline though. Dos anyone know if the allergies eventually work themselves out? |
This is handy to bookmark: OTC Medications Get a good joint supplement like Cosequin or Glycoflex. Most of the less expensive brands don't contain enough glucosamine to be effective. The chart posted shows the dosage for dogs under 25 pounds. My vet told me Lady needs 300 mg a day at 8 pounds. She also has arthritis and giving her Cosequin has made a big difference. It takes months to see an improvement, though, so be patient! Adding a fish oil supplement can really help with allergies. I give Lady 3V caps. Fatty Acids for Allergies & Dry Skin in Dogs |
I have been very fortunate that none of my dogs have allergies. My oldest girl is 12 years old and she is starting to show some stiffness in her joints. I give her glucosamine daily. I contribute the good health of mine to the fact that they are not over vaccinated. Many of the allergies that dogs are getting can be attributed to annual vaccinations. If you give vaccinations annually and they already have the immunity build up in their system then the vaccination will compromise their immune system. I don't know if you are giving annual vaccination but if you are then you might need to reconsider giving those if she is suffering so much from allergies. As for holistic remedies, there are several websites they sell holistic remedies. Here are a couple of them. I have not tried any of the holistic remedies but I am thinking of trying something for joints for my 12 year old. I wish you the best with you baby. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. |
