Anal Glads??? Sorry that's anal glands I am so worried I am not even doing spell checks thanks! Georgie has a bump on his bum and when I go to lift his tail he yelps. He is eating fine, had a normal bowel movement and is walking fine. I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow but in the meantime can anyone offers ideas on what might be wrong. I am worried sick about it. Thank you:) |
So glad you're going to the vet, poor baby! Hard to say what it is - could be anal glands. The only thing I can think of to do, for soothing purposes - if you have any diaper cream or hydrocortisone cream, or antibiotic cream on hand - you could gently put some on the area without lifting his tail. Let us know what the vet says. Best of luck to the little guy! :) |
Thank you we just had them expressed last month by the groomer, but I think Georgie needs it done more often. I actually have plenty of diaper cream I have a 6 month old:) Thanks again |
I am so sorry you baby is have this problem. Do you know how to express the anal glands? Here is a website with some good information on that: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=510 Is there swelling below and on either side of the anus? If the anal glands are impacted then they can rupture and be very painful and your dog will require antibiotics. You can wet a washcloth with warm water and apply that to the area and that will help relieve some of the pain. Please let us know how he is doing tomorrow after his vet visit. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. |

I always allow the vet to take care of our Anal Gland issues. I have read too many horror stories of it being done wrong and causing damage. I am sure that there are many very competent Anal Gland Expressers here and I am not mean to cast a shadow of doubt on your expertise..... I just don't do it. Besides that :D it gives me a chance to visit with my vet and the office crew there -- I just love 'em. Warm water and Epsom Salts sounds like a nice soothing temporary remedy.... I resort to them quite frequently. |
i don't have the stomach to handle the smell when anal glands are drained. i let the groomer handle it. |
How is Georgie doing? What did the vet say? I hope he is much better. |
Thank you everyone I have been so busy taking care of Georgie and my 6 month old son it's taken me a couple of days to respond. We took him to the vet on Monday and he had impacted anal glands. The vet expressed them and put him on 2 antibiotics and a pain medication. He is doing MUCH better!:D He hasn't been running around a lot but I think its the medicine, but I am sure in no time he will be back in action. Thank you again:) |
