worms in an adopted beagle Hi everyone! Last month my brother adopted a beagle mix from a local shelter. It now has worms coming out his back end. He went out and got some stuff called RDF Liq. De-wormer, but that was a week ago and the dog has more coming out tonight. He gave him another dose ( I'm not not sure if he should have or not) but after that he noticed that it had exp. 2/2/08. Now please keep in mind that yes if it was my Sadie, I would of already had her at a vet. And I would take this little guy too but they live about an hour and a half away from me. My brother doesn't have much money now, he just paid for the dog to get fixed and his work has been real slow (he's a roofer) I know he will taken him soon if there is nothing he can do at home for him, does any one know something that can be done at home for this? Thanks so much- Amy |
I have no knowledge of any home remedies. The absolute best option is to do a fecal test and see exactly what the dog has, that way you can treat for specific parasites. Are they little white, rice looking worms? If so, it's most likely tapeworms. I know your brother is running short on money but it's a worthwhile expense. Some parasites can be passed from dogs to humans. A fecal test should only cost around $10 and then the treatment shouldn't be much more than that. Franklin had tapeworms, roundworms, hook worms AND coccidia when we first got him and the treatment all together was only $55. That included a $25 dollar office visit. I can imagine you could bypass the office visit and just bring in a fecal sample and then get whatever medication is needed. |

I know I have Nemex2 and it has worked, but like the Previous Poster said, you need to know what worm there is. For example, Nemex2 doesn't cover hookworms. If the worm was alive and it was segmented, dead looking like rice around the bottom and stuck in hair it is tapeworms. I'd recommend taking him to the vet since dewormers are poison. It will not only be safe but it'll prove to be more cost effective than if he's buying dewormer after dewormer. |
most of the store dewormers only cover 2 round and hook worms so if he has tape tell him to order some tradewinds de wormer i get mine from ebay ( i know some things thats a big no no but i have never had an issue) i just orderd one for 6.50 for 3.00 shipping. came sealed in the manufactures package. its so ewwy im going through the round worm problem now we just got a golden ret puppy and the next thing i know someone has round worms (spagetti looking) and people can get those i was freaking out. calling the pediatricians and the vet i gave them all hartz liquid dewormer for the roundworms and hookworms and im going to repeat it this week then next week im giving them all tape worm dewormer i would rather prevent it that have it good luck tell them to lysol and bleach everything and keep some handsantizer around thats what i did! but the dog outside if he can or keep him in a crate until hes better also if the medicine is working he would still have worms coming out thats how they rid their bodies of the parasites |
he should call the shelter and tell them what's going on - that poor dog - the shelters are susposed to treat the animals they have BEFORE releasing them - he needs to find a vet if it's this bad or call the ASPCA and see if he can go to a reduced fee facility. Worms ARE treatable and this needs to be taken care of right away - man - they give ME the willies - I can't imagine what the dog feels like :( good luck !! |
If the worms look like little rice segments, then he has tapeworms which are caused by ingesting fleas. Just weigh your Beagle and go to the vet and they should sell you a little pill that will get rid of the tapeworms. Most over the counter worming medicines will not kill tapeworms. |
Humans can get worms from dogs, plus this isn't good for the dog. He needs to get him to the vet. Can you lend him some money? |

You're right Tammy. Nemex 2 is for roundworms and hookworms. :) |
Gunner Sorry it has taken me a little bit to get back on this tread. We have had a death in the family and i have been ill. But I wanted to thank all of you for your help. I will call the shelter for him tomorrow and see what they say. But he has told me that he was taking the dog in. I hope he has already done it, I haven't spoke to him in the past week and a half or so. I did tell him to make sure he cleaned really well with bleach and that I thought that he could get some of the types of worms from the dog. I think he had said that the worms were long and skinny? I'm not sure, they whole thing makes my skin crawl. I will let you all know what going on after I speak to him. Thanks again! Amy |
