Any experience with Cushings? My Molly, who is only four years old, probably has Cushings. We are just waiting for the definitive diagnosis to be made, but she has all of the signs according to our vet. (She urinates large amounts of urine with a very low specific gravity, does not have a urinary tract infection, and is drinking a lot and eating a lot. No elevated glucose - yet, anyway.) Does anyone have experience with treating this? I am aware of one drug used to shrink the tumor that causes Cushings, but then also read that dogs usually die a few years after diagnosis anyway, since it is usually diagnosed in older dogs. I hope that doesn't pertain to my four year old as well! |
She is very young to have Cushing's. My Ashlee was diagnosed with it when she was 10. She lived to be 16. I chose not to treat it because she also had severe arthritis and several other problems so the cortisol in her system helped to keep her from being in so much pain. I know sometimes the side effects of treatment can be bad. I don't know what I would do in your case. Has your vet investigated diabetes insipidis? |
I am sorry to hear that. My 11 year old pom was diagnosed last April with it. The treatment caused liver failure and the new specialist said we couldn't treat her Cushing's as the liver failure was more life threatening. Maya is doing ok wihtout any treatment right now. She still drinks alot, wants to eat all the time and needs to go out more but when she was on the meds she was so sick from the medicine. My advice would be to definitely find a specialist who has treated many Cushing's dogs and find the medicine that works best for your baby. Many Cushing's dogs respond well to the treatment and live many years. Your baby is really young so I would definitely seek out the best way to treat it. Good luck |
I've had 2 Cushing's Yorkies, Molly and her daughter, Mindy. Molly was diagnosed when she was 12 and passed away at 15 1/2 by passing a blood clot. I did not treat her with meds, sometimes the meds are worse than the cushings symptoms. She went deaf and blind but still loved her food and came running to her bowl. Her daughter was diagnosed at about 7 years old and she will turn 12 next Monday. She is not going to live as long as her mother. She is also not on meds. Her muscle mass is starting to waste away and her belly is getting the pot belly look, just like her mother. She is also deaf and she gets horrible yeasty ears, which I am constantly fighting. Some cushings dogs are so voracious that they start eating the drywall & baseboards of your house. Mine were always hungry and they would try stealing food or eating poop or eating grass and flowers but they never were destructive. Good luck and I hope that for your sake and your babes, that it is something else and not Cushings. Take care. |
