kidney value elevated soooo.. they're not neutering him AGAIN... and they said his kidney value is elevated.. they want me to purchase special food and antibiotics.. to make sure he's okay next time i come in to get him neutered.. RIGHT.. i'm starting to think this is a big joke and they jus want me to spend my money... anyone else have issues like this? this is my second time to get him neutered.. and it looks like there will be a third time as well.. sigh.. i'm so frustrated.. i don't like being nervous and scared for no reason.. this is starting to irritate me... ahhh... any advice??? |
What is his BUN and Creatinine? Yes, I would be upset but happy that they caught this before surgery or it could have been a problem. I thought they took blood a few weeks ago for the neuter. Why did they take it again? I like same-day bloodwork but thought his had already been done... |
yeah it was i think.. i remember the nurse said BUN but i don't remember if he said creatinine... ahh.. yeah they said he would have had kidney failure if they went into surgery so i'm relieved for that.. but i just question if the antibiotics and special food is necessary.. they said it's recommended.. and i don't want to get it if it's not necessary.. i mean they said it's a low protein diet.. my baby eats everything so i'm sure i can get him to eat whatever is low protein.. plus he loves veggies.. either that or i can always ask YT members on low protein meal ideas.. =] i thought they did blood work last month too.. but i guess they jus decided to do it again... |
We're sort of going through the same thing. Marley was supposed to get spayed today, and one of her kidney readings came out high. They gave her fluids for a couple hours, and then redid the bloodwork, but it was still high. We decided not to spay her today, better safe than sorry, so she has to go in again in 2 weeks for more bloodwork and a urine test. |

I hope it's nothing serious and this is a perfect example of why preop bloodwork should be done. But if it is just BUN and it is just slightly elevated, that could happen from dehydration or maybe a high protein meal, so it might not be anything serious. |

please request a copy of all labs every time they take them and keep a 3 ring binder with all invoices and labs. . If you don't have any of that right now, then request it tomorrow. That's what i did. I asked for a history of every invoice and every lab test. You need that especially when talking with YT. I don't know much- but I know having the lab and values right in front of me has REALLY helped in determining the severity of things when YTer's are helping me. I really don't know where I would be w/o YT?? I have several issues going on presently with my 2 girls and YTers has helped me so much!!! In my spare time, I try to return the favor based on my experiences. we all need each other in the biggest way! :-) |
I would want to know more info from my vet. If his values have been up 2 times I would want to see a specialist. It is good that they don't put him under until the cause of the elevated values can be determined. I had a puppy with kidnney failure and her Bun was literally off the charts. If his are only slightly elevated it is probably just a minor issue that should resolve. |
I remember your previous post. Neutering is completely out of the question for now. YOU NEED TO GET THE KIDNEY VALUES AND POST THEM HERE SO WE CAN HELP. |
wow i wish i had seen this before i got off work!!! as for now i give him lots of fruits and veggies.. and lots of water.. next week i go back to check his kidneys.. and i will get copies of everything. thanks for all the help. i will keep you guys updated! =D |

I had a similar issue. Cooper went to get neutered at 7 months and his pre-op bloodwork showed elevated BUN/Creatnine and Phosphorous levels. They eventually did an ultrasound and confirmed he had underdeveloped kidneys (Renal Dysplasia). While in my particular case the prognosis wasn't good, the early diagnosis, medical intervention (meds, low protein foods, phosphorous binder, Sub q fluids) and hands-on approach were all instrumental in keeping him alive longer. My thoughts and prayers go out to you....I can imagine it is a frightening and frustrating time...continue to let us know your baby's progress..... |
