Scratched Eye :( Hailey's eye got scratched this morning playing with the cats. Now she is keeping the eye shut. She is acting normal except she dosent open the scratched eye. When I open it to look the is a white film on it but it dosent seem to bother her even when I open it. Is there anything I can do tonight to help her? I will take her to the vet tommorow if my baby dosen't get better. Sabrina |
My doctor says for human eyes, you should use ice for 24 to 48 hours around that area. After that you can use heat, but if heat makes it worse, then go back to using ice. Should be the same for dogs, but again, be careful and take her in when you can... Hopefully someone else can chime in? We'll all be thinking of you little Hailey, Mommy will take care of you! --- Put socks on animal's front paws to prevent scratching. Muzzle animal and gently attempt to push back in socket. Keep moist with saline solution (1 tsp. salt/1 pint water). http://www.puppydogweb.com/articles/links/emergency.htm |
You could do the ice but then also use a salt water mixture or if you are a contact wearer you could use saline solution and warm it a little and flush the eye with that just to keep it clean until you can get her to a vet. |
I hope she gets better soon! You should take her to the vet when you have a chance. |
Hi Sabrina, Do not let it go. Take her to the vet first thing in the am and have the eye stained. They will give you antibiotics for it. If her eye doesn't appear to be 100 percent better in a couple of days go back and tell them you want it stained again. I am not trying to scare you but I had this happen and my Rio ended up in surgery for a melting ulcer. If you let it go they can lose their eye. I am not saying that will happen here but I am emphasising that it is nothing to play with. Even if the vet tells you to come back in a week for restaining if it isn't better by a couple of days insist that they look at it earlier. I did not see any improvement in 2 days, I called and they got me in, we were at the eye specialist for surgery within 2hrs. This was a 1200 dollar surgery to save my babys eye. Good Luck!!! |
Buddha got scratched in the eye by the cat also and the vet prescribed some drops and then checked it again. His eye turned blue and then as it healed returned to the normal color. |
Kim, what do you mean his eye turned blue? Do you mean from the stain or his eye color? |

Now that I think about it, I think it was AFTER because he wouldn't open his eye right after it happened. |
Sorry to hear about your baby's eye. Isn't YT great though for gleaming knowledge from everyone? |
Yeah, the stain is scary looking!!! |
My daughter's Baxter got a cut in his eye and it ulcerated. He had to have surgery and then had his eye sewed shut for a week. We called him the one-eyed bandit. Thank goodness she had a good vet and he saved the eye! I hope your little one is better soon! Please keep us updated! |
Im so sorry that Hailey got her eye scratch. Clean her eye with salt water and please take her to the Vet asap. Most likely the vet is going to give you an antibiotic ointment. Good luck. Please keep us posted. |

Let us know How Hailey is doing.. Oh geesh...I'm sorry to hear about the scratched eye on Hailey.. :( I bet the vet will give you some anitbiotic drops. My daughter scratched her eye and thats what they gave her... It was painful to the light...(scratched the cornea actually)...so that can explain some of the closing of the eye... She felt better inside and not in bright light...it hurt bad with light for some reason...like pins she said. |
I would take him to the vet. i hope his eye gets better. poor babie. |
Please take your baby to the vet as soon as possible! I do not mean this to sound mean, but cats are very dirty animals, and I would be very concerned about infection in the eye. I would actually not put any drops in before it is examined by a vet, no saline anything...Bruce has had conjunctivitus (pink eye) that he got from some filthy little child petting him, and the vet said that saline or other drops would have just spread the infection around his eye. |
Vet immediately. It's not that cats are worse than other scratches, but part of their claw can come off in the eye. I've had this happen with a dog. And any scratch to an eye is dangerous in animals and in humans. |
She is fine. Scratched cornia. Taking her back today for a check up. Thanks for everyones concern. :) |
Oh glad to hear it wasn't too bad!:) |
Scratched Cornea 1 Attachment(s) I just went through this several months ago. My little Itzi scratched her eye I think when I was hiding Easter Eggs for my nieces and nephews. I took her to the vet and I was sent to a Ophthamlmologist. She was started on 5 different antibotics and one ointment to stop the infection. No sleep for two days. When we went back for a recheck, she had gotten worse and was rushed to surgery to save the eye (Told I could have it removed for 150.00, if I didn't want to spend the money) They preformed a Pedicle graft. To make a long story short. Her eye was saved- she has 55% vision in that eye with some scare tissue left from the surgery, but she still has her eye !!! I was very blessed everything worked out. :D |
Wow,I feel really lucky!! If your eye heals like Rio tho that scar will be invisible to everyone but you. Even my vets don't notice it till they look at it with a light. It did take several months for the white scar to go away tho. |
