Sedative:Acepromazine I'm a little nervous...I recently took Polo on his first plane ride. Because I have spoiled him to death, I took him to the vet to get a prescribed sedative so that he won't yap the entire 2hours on the plane. Well the sedative worked perfectly...only problem is that he was shaking more than normal, very limp and now he has this gooey stuff in his eye that hards like crust after sleeping. Has anyone experienced this medication or something similar? He is coming around now, but I'm scared he almost had a seizure or may have had too much of the medication. He is back to his normal self almost, but i've also seen a few traces of blood in his stool. Not sure if that was from the after effects of the pill or what and he nevers has blood in his stool and he is currently on the raw diet. |
I have read on here someplace where people had trouble with a sedative but don't know what kind. Maybe do a search on sedatives. |
I hope someone has the answers for you soon & Polo will feel better. Good Luck! |
I guess the only advice I have is to call your vet because I don't know much about this med and those symptoms don't sound good. |
I was given the same sedative from my vet and it worked like a charm! I only gave Lola a tiny little chip about an 1/8 of the pill. She was awake from it but just rested through the flight. How much did your vet prescribe? |
That's what my vet gave Rudy when we took him on the long car ride to the shore last year. It really worked for him. He was awake the whole time but not anxious at all in his crate on the way down. I didn't experience any of those symptoms with Rudy when he took the medicine. But he's a big boy, weighs almost 15 lbs. Maybe you should call your vet and let him know Polo's reaction to the medicine. Maybe next time they can give him something different. Doesn't sound like Acepromazine agrees with him. Hope you feel better, Polo. :wave4: |
Vets gave me a few for Banjo, after his leg surgery! I was worried after pain meds were gone I would not be able to keep him quite!! They only gave me 3- 10 mg tabs- prescribed for 1/2 tab- 1 X a day-IF NEEDED! i ONLY GAVE 1/4 TAB! istill have 3/4 of a tab left- so I have gone really easy on them! We have had no problems----I better knock on wood!!!! Banjo is about 9#! hope your baby feels better soon! |
I was prescribed it for my dog that got too excited at the vet, panted too much and her tougue turned blue. Vet visits had to be super quick. We are still researching this whole ct or something other than that. However with that ACE is what they call it for short was some pretty hefty stuff. there are people on her that have things posted. I heard of very deep sleep and it scared me so bad that I NEVER gave it to her. I think the dosage was too high for your little one. I would tell the vet about the shakiness too. I would do a google on ACE but type in the whole med name. |
i've seen many dogs on ace for various reasons and rarely see any problems with this med. can i ask what dose the vet told you to give and what mg the pills are? |
Gizmo is terrified of thunder and lightening. We were given this med a couple of years ago and has worked well for him. At 11 pounds he was prescribed half of a 10mg tab and it was a little too much. So now I go with just a quarter tab when he needs it. Doesn't dope him up, just calms the shaking and panting. Have never had side affects. Giz has a history of pancreatitis and HGE and this med does not aggrivate things. Has been great for us. |
