I am hoping Bella and Diggy are better today. Who would ever think that such a thing could happen? I would send an e-mail off to the manufacturer and let them know you almost lost your two precious babies because of their bacteria infected chews! They need to know. What about sending them the bill too? We purchase these items thinking they are safe and unless we read a horror story such as yours or mine we would never know otherwise. Bella and Diggy get better. Bella drink your water little girl. Make mommy happy. |
OMG! I sooo glad both your babies are going to be ok! How SCARY! I do not feed my boys anything that they cannot eat in a matter of one sitting thank goodness! i was thinking about getting some bullysticks, but I think I'll hold off! Thank you for the warning! Give diggy & bella a kiss from Dex & fletch! sooo happy they are going to be ok!!! |
 makes perfect sense that bacteria would grow on it! My Bella will take them outside and lay in the grass and then go get them later that day. I am going outside today to search the grass to make sure she hasnt hidden any and i guess the rest go in the trash. How scary for you PAULA!! Hope those two are on the road to a full recovery. It is not uncommon for humans to get c.diff after long term antibiotics. they usually treat with an antifungal med for the gut. We isolate patients with clostridium difficile in the hospital. These lil guys get so sick so fast. I am not sure if the strain is the same for humans and dogs. Guess my point is have your family wash their hands after handling the pets and before eating or touching their faces. Its easy to transfer from human to human, i just dont know about dog to human. Big hug to the lil patients!!!:getwellso |

So sorry they were both sick but I'm glad they're doing better now. I just threw all my bully sticks away and a piece of rawhide that Matty was chewing on. Thanks for the info. :) |

I want them gone now! Thank you thank you thank you for the warning! Bug has never been interested in bullies, but my westie loves them....ugh...I wanna go home now! |

OKay Bella update!! SHE POOPED SOLID OMG you guys I am so happy right now. I PRAY PRAY PRAY it stays solid and this is a true sign of improvement!!!!! She isnt quite herself yet still has times of being out of it but MUCH better everyday :) Thank you all SO MUCH for your prayers and concerns. I really do appreciate it!!!!!! |
So So Happy Bella is on the road to recovery!!! Keep those fluids going into her. I use a syringe or dropper. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: |
I just now saw this, but I'm soo happy she's doing better! I can only imagine how scared you were. I'm glad you found the cause of this and warned the rest of us! I hope that she continues to recover!!! |
 I didn't have time to read this whole thread ... but I read enough!! Thank God little Bella is going to be OK! I will keep you all in my prayers. Thank you so much for the warning. After Toto choked on a Greenie and I threw them out, she was absolutely wild and since everyone was raving about Flossies, I tried those. She really liked that but she was chewing on one and began to gag and choke. When I took it from her I pulled a really long string of it out of her that probably reached all the way to her little tummy!! Out went the Flossies too! Now she only gets 3-4 Wild Salmon Yummy Chummies a day and a dehydrated chicken tender after dinner. If the chicken tenders turn out to be bad for her ... God help me, I will be out of options!! ;) |
All I know is its all SO VERY SCARY!!! Its hard deciding what you trust and what you dont. Right now her only treat is a half a cheerio :( She is so sad she LOVES her treats and doesnt get why she cant have them. Poor girl. I have NO idea what I am gonna use as a chew for her. Both of mine loved flossies SO MUCH but NO way are we ever using them again.... |

WOO HOO!!!! SOLID poop!!!! WTG Bella!!! Keep it up girl!! and we've never done Flossies or any rawhide but the CET stuff,, but we do occasionally,, (like today),, give the girls a Booda Bone,, but always when watched,, they absolutely LOVE them!! today is Trixie's first,, and she is growling and keeping big ole Daisy (9.4 lbs) at bay,, and we have a Nylabone too,, the chicken one,, its been around for 2 yrs,, they take it by spells,,, |
Thank goodness Bella continues to improve!! You mentioned getting a food dehydrator and trying sweet potatoes - I can tell you that at the Novi Pet Expo there was someone selling packages of these (I can't remember the brand name). They looked lots like a dried apricot, but thicker and much firmer. Well long story short, one of the people who bought these gave a piece to her baby. When they chew and it hydrates with the saliva, it becomes really super sticky and gooey. A piece got got stuck on her very back tooth and the rest went down the back of her throat choking her. They thought she was going to literally choke to death when they finally got it out. So that is something to keep in mind as well. Seems like nothing is safe!!! |

Okay scratch that idea.....Thanks for the well wished! and Yes Bella is MUCH better she even ran down the driveway with Diggy tonight :) |
Read through this entire thread and how frightening. I don't use nylabones since Charlie only has a few teeth, but I did when Sophie was a pup. I remember her chewing and pieces were loose; threw it away because of the possibility of swallowing. I bought bones from the grocery store, simmered in parsley water and she chewed on it. Safer I think they plastic, stinky hooves which I believe are unsafe. Great news she is recovering. Warmly, Deborah |
OMGosh.....how horrible! I am glad they are both doing much better! I threw all our flossies & bully styx away last week since after chewing on it for a little bit, Bailey got terrible diarrhea. I am so picky about what they both eat so I knew it was from the bully styx. Bailey found a small piece of an old one someplace last night and had diarrhea again today.:( So that does confirm it! They are both getting groomed at the vets in the morning and I will bring in a fecal sample just to be sure. I do feed them dehydrated chicken strips which they both love, the place where I buy their food sells them and I found them at target also. </IMG> |
I don't have to use my imagination to know what you and your babies went thru. I can still remember the pittiful look on Gizmo's face as he was puddling blood on the vet's table. We have been there too. I'm so happy she has come thru this. You are a great mom for getting her the care she needed. Nothing but happy thoughts for you and yours. :) p.s. Friends please don't let your babies down on the floor at the vet's. You just never know. |
I just now sat here and read through all your posts on this subject, HOW SCAREY this had to have been for you. I've never given any of our furkids bully sticks or flossies and I won't either. I'm soooo picky about what I give them, mainly all they get for treats is Old Mother Hubbard bones, their all natural and I have never had a problem with them in all the years I've given them to out furkids. I won't give rawhides either, have read some stuff about what's actually in them, it's horrifying. Anyhow, I'm so glad your furbabies are doing much better, please keep us updated as your able. |
Oh Paula, I'm so sorry to hear this! I am glad Bella is improving, and that Dig-ster is back to normal. I'll be thinking of you and Bella, and sending prayers up for a quick recovery. |
OMG! I'm so glad Bella is feeling better. I'm so sorry u went through this. So this bacteria can grow on any item they chew on? That's real scary. I would have never known a bully stick could cause all of this. I never give bully sticks and rawhides cuz they gross me out, but now I'm wondering about the everlasting treatball and tiny paws. I hope she keeps moving towards recovery. |

I dont think plastic items are an issue.....I think its more animal based products...like pig ears, cow hooves bullies, flossies, etc.. Id keep everthing clean just to be safe tho! |
OMG.. I so glad they are both doing better. I worry so much about my babies, i wash there bedding every other day, and once a week, i wash all of there toys. Brutis:aimeeyork Ms. Fergie:aimeeyork Penny:aimeeyork Georgie:aimeeyork Buji |

Wow, Paula, I am so sorry you had this scare with Bella and Diggy!!!!! I just found this thread, and am sooo soo very happy that they are doing better. This is truly scary. I for one, want to thank you for the warning, we don't use bullies or flossies. But now I know we are never going to start!!! Kisses and hugs for Bella and Diggy Hugs for their mommy too |
So glad to her she is up and running!!!:D :D :D |
Glad Bella and Diggy are on the road to recovery! How scary for all of you!! Were there some bully sticks recalled for samonella recently or was that something else?? I wonder if these were some from China?? I tried to find things for my girls to chew on at Petsmart and all of their bully sticks, and all chewies except nylabones were made in China. I won't buy anything from China anymore. Thanks for all the infromation!! HUGS to Bella and Diggy!! XOXOXO |
