Yorkie not gaining weight I have a yorkie who is 2 days away from being 14 weeks. She has not gained any weight for almost 2 weeks. She is current on vaccinations. Any suggestions? I just moved to Oregon from California and haven't found a vet. I am calling a new vet Monday and my reg. vet from Cali. I was hoping this is normal but really concerned. Our other yorkie a week younger is gaining plenty of weight. Help Please, Concerned mom |
Gain Weight Replied earlier, not sure what happened, Please make sure she eats at this young age, it does not take long to go down hill, per my Vet. Be sure to give pea size drops of Nutri-CAL 4/5 times a day, can find at pet stores, or a little honey, light Karo syrup, per breeders. Boiled chicken, quality can, any reasonable food to not let blood sugar level drop. They are too tiny to not eat, gain weight. My puppy had all kind of medical issues keeping weight down. Hurry and find new Vet. Hope she is ok. Maybe she is eating, so it has to be medical reason only Vet can advise. |

not gaining weight She had a complete full check up before we left. She is perfectly health is what our vet said. She eats plenty!!! I already do the nutri-cal and in the morning and evening they get vanilla yogurt with a little karo syrup. They were on baby food and now have progressed to just the yogurt and good hard food. She has plenty of energy! She is really funny and runs back and forth on the treadmill. Of course it is not on :) My vet in Cali. thinks that I am worried over nothing. He said that their is nothing wrong with her. No worms, no hernias, nothing. She has a clean bill of health. I love my vet in California and he is still my vet for when we are there. Any surgeries, etc. I will find a vet here tomorrow for emergencies and check ups. Has anyone else had a yorkie just stop growing and then start a growth spurt. Based on her parents she should have been 4 to 5 pounds and about the same on the yorkie weight chart. Now I will be lucky for 3.5 pounds unless like her friend she does a huge growth spurt. Any ideas? I also have 2 more yorkies arriving within a month. So, I hope my overprotective obsessive compulsion mellows out |
She is only 14 weeks old? She has alot of time to grow..usually you double the weight at 12 weeks..so if she is around 3 pounds right now..she should reach about 6 pounds as an adult..they all grow at different rates thats for sure. If your vet thinks she is going great then she is..:) it wont be long and she will start growing more and more..filling out and getting a bit taller..I wouldnt worry..are your two new yorkies going to be puppies? Did you have a bile acids test done before bringing her home? Dr. Center recommends that all Yorkies have one before going to their new home because liver shunts are so common in Yorkies. If it wasn't done, I'd get one done just to rule it out as a cause of her not gaining weight. The test is easy and inexpensive, in your area probably around $50. |
Holly gained essentially no weight for about 2-3 weeks, then put on nearly a pound over the next month. Just make sure baby is eating, he should catch up. |
re: not gaining weight Yes she had all the test done. No shunts, nothing. She is not 3 pounds, only 1 pound 14 ounces and is 14 weeks and 2 days old. When I called my vet he said stop worrying. Thanks everyone for the advice. I don't think she will be 6 pounds, but I don't care as long as she is healthy. Of course I would prefer she reach at least 4 to 4.5 pounds. At 12 weeks she was 1.15. |
