Please help with suggestions!
 

Our yorkie (Jerry) vomitted around 4-5 times yesterday and had a diarhea (gelly type). Very passive and not happy as usual. We feed him royal canin yorkshire food. Once in a while we give him something from a table, 2 days ago we gave a him a very small piece of cartilage from a rib. We took him to vet today and he said that he is dehydrated, we give him water ourselves and encourage him to drink. He ate yesterday, but today did not take one little bit. Vet did not give any valuable information except to take him for blood and xray samples, possibly hospitalize. Before Jerry used to have one day out of a full week when he is very passive, maybe vomit once and diarhea. His vomit was yellow with bubbles.

I am very worried, please help. Did anyone else have this type of problem? Please post anything that may help.

Welcome to YT. I am so sorry that your baby is ill. I would not recomment bones at all. As far as what to do about the dehydration, I know there are people on here who can give you really good advice.

The bloodwork needs to be done and then could you post the amylase and lipase levels? I would be concerned about pancreatitis.

It isn't at all normal to throw up one day a week either. Did I read that part right?

What did the vet give for dehydration?

So sorry about Jerry...I hope someone has some good advice for you.

That sort of sounds like Max when he had pancreatitis, but they diagnosed it right away. Of course, it happened at night on a Friday so we had to take him to the emergency clinic. He had to stay all weekend (I picked him up on Monday morning) with IV's in and getting meds. They need to keep their stomach empty to give it a rest and they can only do that by putting them on IV's so they still get some nutrition and fluids. The amylase is usually the first thing they check, so make sure that they did, b/c if it goes for too long he's really going to be dehydrated and the inflammation can cause more internal damage.
If this vet doesn't do something, take him to one who will.

I have recently had a few episodes of gastric upset with little Ranger, one of which required a four day hospital stay due to dehydration from just one day of diarhea, it can happen very quickly with these tiny things.

He was fine for a couple weeks and then had another episode, which we combatted with Pepto and didn't have to have him hospitalized. One week later, another episode of diarhea and 4-5x of vomitting throughout the night. We took him in first thing, gave him Reglan to combat his naseua, and my vet suggested we change food (of course he suggested changing to Science Diet), as Ranger might have an allergy to the Innova that was upsetting his system. He is thinking allergies as all tests came back normal. I changed him to Wellness last week and he's been fine.

Bottom line, please take your dog to another vet if this one doesn't do anything. Vomitting once a week is not normal, 4-5 times is an emergency. I have heard bad things about Royal Canin, you may want to consider changing food. Also, never any table scraps for these little guys, as others have said, pancreatitis from too much fat is SO common.

I am SORRY to hi-jack your thread, I have just been through so much of this lately, I hope I never have to deal with it again!!!

I have not had problems with vomitting but have had serious problems with muccousy jelly like diarrhea to the point of lethargy from dehydration. The diarrhea has also been bloody. Is it possible for your pup to have pancreatitis along with a lower GI upset. Have you tried with holding solid food for a day to help the vomitting. I have had to cut food to a minimal for a day, give her water which had dog food soaked in it to give it flavor and give my Bridgett a non canine approved med called Sulfasalzine; 1/6 of a 500 mg tab twice daily. This is an antibiotic/anti-inflammatory which alomost instantly will stop the diarrhea. I just have to wonder if you are on a visious cycle of this pancreas and lower GI problem.

You may need vet intervention because this sounds very serious. I agree, go to another vet, this one doesn't sound like he/she is familiar with small dogs and how quickly things can go wrong.

At the first sign of vomiting or diahrrea, I stop all dog food. Give Gerber's chicken baby food (just chicken, not mixed with anything else), mix it with a little plain cooked white rice. 1 teaspoon of chicken, 2 teaspoons of rice, with just a touch of non-fat chicken broth to moisten. Give this 3 times a day for the first day, and try to encourage fluids (water). It takes almost no effort for the stomach to digest the rice/babyfood, but provides something soothing and nutritious in the system.

Thank you everybody for help! He slept for a few hours after the vet (who didn't do anything) and was just fine. We came home and found him very happy and aliVE!! I was very pleased and happy myself. We ran outside for 10 minutes with him. Our Jerry is back! he ate last night with great appetite and drank plenty of water. Today in the morning woke me up as usual, licking my face and calling me out. Thank you again!!!

So glad he is better. I know with mine, I learned the hard way not to give them any people food. Some do fine others get real sick,mine get sick.

I am so happy for all of you. Keep that recipe handy for any time he has an upset stomach. It had worked for years with my Yorkies.
