New and Worried Mom I am flipping out. I got my new furbaby Winston about a week ago. He is 14 wks old and 1.8 lbs and had a cough when I got him. I took him to two different vets who said it was probably Kennel Cough and gave me antibiotics and recommended Robitussin when the cough was bad and said he would live. He seems to sleep all the time, with very few spurt of playtime in between. This might be the medicine making him sleepy, but it really worries me! His tummy always feels full. We feed him only Eukanuba small bites (which he eats often) and supplement him with nutracal once a day. He also drinks often. He has to pee all the time but poops only once a day. When I got my beagle I had none of these problems and I am just sOOOOO worried about him!!! I want him to be okay--he is SO cute and sweet!! I am taking him again to the vet tomorrow because I have been very worried. I second guess EVERYTHING that is happening with him. Am I worrying too much?!? Any advice is highly appreciated and I am sooo glad I found this site! ~angela |
Please Take your baby to the vet tomorrow. I lost my Precious on the 4th and nearly lost Sassi to pancreatitis!!! Don't wait!!!! I will regret waiting the rest of my life! |

Let us know how it goes after the vet. Jessica |
All his symptoms do sound like Kennel Cough for sure, I have researched it to death. He has the traditional 'sounds like something in the throat' cough. I just hope I am making a big deal out of nothing. Its funny you mentioned making a list because I already have! But I added chest xray and blood panel to the list. Thanks ya'll. |
Princess just went through that last week and is still on meds. She slept ALL DAY! She is 19wks. I went crazy too! I was so worried, I didnt know if she was going to make it. I thought it had something to do with a fall she had, but the vet said it was not. They put her on Clavamox and butophanol (not spelled right). Both of those seem to be helping her now. The 3rd day on the meds and she was bouncing around again! It'll be ok, just go to vet again and let them treat her and put you at ease! Keep us posted ;) |
Winston's mom, please check your PM.. |
i always have to warn people whose babies have kennelcough.. my baby started out with kennelcough which turned to pnuemonia because of a prodecure an ignorant vet decided to perform on my puppy. As you can see by my avatar he is not around anymore for this reason specifically.. Whatever they want to do DO NOT LET THEM DO A TRANS TRACHAEL WASH on your puppy! This should not be done on small dogs yet alone yorkies.. if you know the breed you would know that a puppy especially a yorkie cannot withstand a tube being shoved into their throat and flushing water in and sucking it out to collect a culture to see what kind of bacteria is in there. This is what caused his pnuemonia which then killed him! Always be very careful about what you let a vet do to your puppy. I have learned to always get a second opinion if it is something that you are questioning.. |
This web site discusses kennel cough as well as other "possibilities" that may interest you and answer some of your questions: http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq3.htm |
I am sorry your little guy is so sick but it sounds like he is eating well and they do sleep a lot as puppies. One of mine slept so much I was always trying to wake him up I was so afraid of hypoglycemia. It turns out he goes to bed early and sleeps late and likes to take naps during the day. Kennel cough is rarely life threatening and it just takes 6 to 8 weeks to get over. My little girl had kennel cough after I got her. She got it from a trip to the vets. She didn't stop coughing for 8 weeks but she was healthy otherwise. I am sure your baby will be fine but the fewer invasive procedures the better as Chewy's mom advised. |
Okay, I took winston again to the vet. They did a blood panel and everything is fine except for a little low iron. He is fighting off the infection (upper respiratory infection) as best as he can according to his white blood count. The vet just said to watch his breathing and eating patterns for changes. We are hopeful that this doesnt turn into pneumonia! He said his lungs sounded just fine, which was great news! I have faith this pup will make a full recovery! Thanks for all the advice! |
I really hope Winston will be okay soon . |
