Swallowed a Penny... This morning my 8 month old Yorkie was not acting like himself. He was so lethargic. When I picked him up he just felt like a little wet noodle in my arms. I tried to give him breakfast and he didn't eat at all. So, I immediately took him in to the Animal ER. Long story short, on x-rays it appeared that he swallowed a coin. I guess depending on how long the coin has been in there, this can be very bad. Coins can contain things that are poisonous and can cause life-threatening anemias. So, the first step was to get the penny OUT! They used an endoscope and were successful. I was so thankful he didn't have to go to surgery! Then they did bloodwork to check to see if he was developing any toxicities in the blood from the metal. The bloodwork came back showing some zinc toxicities so they are keeping him overnight for observation and have him on IV fluids. I just got a call at 10pm. I guess they drew more blood and it showed that his red blood cells dropped from 37,000 to 27,000 since this afternoon. They said this is a pretty significant drop. Then he also had a case of diarrhea that was pretty much pure blood. At this point they are continuing IV fluids and watching him and going to draw some more blood later to check the red blood cells. If they keep dropping he may need a blood transfusion. I just feel sick about the whole thing. I am so scared! I don't even know how this happened. He is with me ALL the time and I never saw him get a penny. I never knew that a penny could be so dangerous! This is just awful :( :( :( |
Wow! I'm glad you found YT. I hate to welcome you under these circumstances, but welcome. I am so sorry for your little one, but I appreciate the warning. I need to check more carefully for pennies and other coins. I never realized how dangerous they could be. Prayers headed your way from all of us. |

You poor thing! I will be praying for you and your baby. Don't blame yourself. These little one get into EVERYTHING! They are so close to the ground, and so what ever reason they love to eat stuff!!! Any time you need it ask for prayer, there are tons of YTers that pray and we all will!!! Let us know how your baby is. |
Thank goodness they got it out,if the used a endoscope it had not traveld to far down his stomach or they would of had to do surgery so that is a good thing. Prayers coming to you for your little one. Puppies can get into about everything they should not. |
Thanks so much for all the kind words. This has been a very difficult time. As of this morning at 4am his red blood cells dropped to 20,000. I guess the IV fluids make the red blood cells appear a little lower than they actually are. But, they are definitely declining which is bad. I also found out that it wasn't bloody diarrhea last night, but bloody urine. He has continued to have the bloody urine. The vet said this shows his blood is continuing to thin and is not able to coagulate properly. If the red blood cells drop below 18,000 they will start to see a "clinical situation" where they will need to do a blood transfusion. If he continues to decline we may need to go to an Internal Medicine specialist for "more advanced" treatments. At this point I don't feel very good. The vet was looking at me with "those eyes". The sympathetic worried look that you don't want to see from your vet. At this point he is at my regular vet (I transferred him this morning) and he will go back to the ER at nights so he can continue to be monitored. The vet is going to do more bloodwork at call me later this morning. If you pray and can say a prayer for my baby I would appreciate it! Thanks again for all the support. |
