Ulcer? My baby Bogart was just diagnosed with an ulcer. Actually, after ruling out several other things, including an obstruction, the vet said that she is "treating him as if he has an ulcer." His only real symptoms were that he was throwing up his food relatively soon after eating - but otherwise active, wanting to eat, drinking, peeing and pooping just fine, etc. He threw up this all weekend and my husband thought that he just had an upset stomach - so he kept feeding him. I was out of town, or else paranoid mommy here would have taken him to the vet after the first or second vomit. But, now the vet says that she sees signs of digestive blood in his vomit and stool (no diarrhea) and is keeping him (he has been there since yesterday morning) until he goes 24 hours without vomitting. Does anyone have any wisdom or advice on ulcers or the symptoms Bogart exhibited? |
It would concern me that he is throwing up after eating. How old is he? Did they check his liver and pancreas? What food is he eating? .......or maybe IBD? |
Thanks for your reply Ellie May. Bogart is 16 months old and weighs a little over 4 pounds. He is short, but stocky. They did a full blood panel and the results indicate that everything with his liver and pancreas are fine. But, to be honest, I don't know the specifics of what tests were run. The vet mentioned that she was mildly concerned about Addisons, but that he results came back well within the normal range. We have also done x-rays and some dye test to rule out an obstruction, and those were clear. He has never had diarrhea from this whole ordeal, and the only problem with his stool is that is apparently is a bit dark suggesting digestive blood?? He eats Canidae. What is IBD? I can't search for it under the "search" function of this site. |

My shepherd had pancreatitis without it showing up in the bloodwork the only reason we did find out it was this because you could see in his ultrasound his pancreas was all inflamed |

No, he has never exhibited any strange signs after eating -- no shaking or walking in circles. And no, I don't think that he gets depressed. He is as active at 16 months as he was when we first got him around 5 months old - he plays hard and then konks out for a bit, and then he is up again running around and wanting to play with anyone and everyone. He goes to daycare 3 days a week and the techs always comment on how active and playful he is. I would not say he is a big or little eater. His appetite varies, which I think is normal, but overall he is a pretty good eater. And even over the past couple days when he was vomitting - he still wanted to eat and scratched at his food mat. Thanks for the message Chrissy - I will ask the vet about pancreatis when we go back to visit Bogart tonight. |

I know this is shameful - but I am bumping myself. I talked with the vet about pancreatis and she didn't seem to feel that his symptoms were consistent. She also indicated that there were no signs on the x-ray or in his bloodwork, but I know you both suggested an ultrasound? They sent Bogart home yesterday and he hasn't been able to keep a meal down yet. He throws up his food anywhere from 30 min - 6 hours (throwing up food in the am after sleeping) after eating. Although his energy is a bit low, he really doesn't have any other symptoms I can notice. His vomit (sorry) just looks like his food moistened and spit back up. The doctors have him on Pepcid (2x day), the pink antibiotic (2x day), some syrup to coat his stomach 1 hour before eating (Metoclopramide syrup), and Carafate (3x a day crushed up in his food). He is eating I/D, which I did notice contains turkey???? Ugh, anyone have any advice? I have a $780 vet bill from earlier this week and still no real answers. The poor guy can't keep down food!!! Please help! |
So, he is on 3 meds and a special diet and it isn't helping and the vet is confused? If it was my situation I would do a bile acid test. It should come back clean but if it doesn't then that is probably your problem. If it comes back clean then there is no reason not to consider an ultrasound (except money) because it shows lots of things. It would show an inflammed pancreas. If it was an ulcer, wouldn't these meds be helping? When Ellie had an ultrasound the vet said her pancreas was inflammed (pancreatitis). Her only symptom was one week before the ultrasound she threw up all day and couldn't hold food down. So while it probably isn't his problem, it certainly could be. Dark stool can mean blood but it can also mean excess iron or maybe an upset stomach. I don't think it always means blood... Since he is vomiting with no diarrhea, it is less likely colitis or something like that I would think. Sometimes they throw up if the food is too rich for them but Canidae doesn't fit in that category. How long are these meds suppose to take to work? |
