help Jolie' (mommie)...I noticed tonight that she has a few inverted nipples and they are hard like rocks and milk is leaking from them...and her two lowest nipples (don't seem to have milk coming out)have not really been sucked on but the puppies were latching on the her skin and it is red with little whelps and they have hard sacks in that area too. She gave birth on Monday, 2/11/08 I wish I had noticed it earlier...I will bring her in to see the vet in the am. The puppies have not lost any weight...they pretty much all gained an ounce. Any suggestions on what to do? Greatly appreciated!! |
I cannot help you with this but wish you lots of luck with your babies! Welcoime to YT! d |
Your female most likely has mastitis. http://dogtrainingandcare.info/dog-c...r-mastitis.php Try to put a warm compress on her nipples. Do you happen to have any amoxicillin on hand? Your females need some antibiotics as soon a possible. Try the warm compresses tonight and take her to the vets first thing in the morning. Most likely she is just in the early stages and most likely her milk is still good. If left untreated it can be very dangerous for the mom and her babies. |
Thanks!!! Thank you so much...after reading I am almost positive that is what she has. We will be at the vet at 8 AM...thank god the puppies are gaining weight...they have not lost any weight. Thanks for the support! It is greatly appreciated. Jolie' is laying on her back resting now. |

Just for future knowledge....I buy Fish-mox from Revival Animal Health Products. Fish-Mox is amoxicillin in capsule form. Revival will even provide a sheet that tells how to mix it with water and how much to give your dog. Any time I have a female that is showing the early signs of mastitis I start giving her amoxicillin twice a day and usually by the second day the mammary glands are back to normal. |
Back Home Thanks for the comments...we went to the vet, he gave her a shot of Baytril, and 2 medications (Baytril and Rimadyl by mouth). We were told to put cold compresses on her just for today. Says she should be fine in a couple days. We need to keep a close eye on her. She is still feeding and caring for her puppies. Thanks for the help and support it is greatly appreciated.:animal-pa |
