Maddie is at the Vet My poor little Maddie. She has been so sick for about a week and a half. She started out with throwing up...then dry heaves...then diarrhea that wouldn't stop. Her little tummy is so full of gas and just rumbling and squeaking. I took her to a vet, because mine was not in the office, and she said Maddie had the flu. She gave her an antibiotic and Maddie seemed to get better, but still wasn't herself...sleeping most of the day...depressed...just not my Maddie. Yesterday she started throwing up again and last night she started the diarrhea. She went at 12 and there was some form to it, but mushy. She then had messy diarrhea at 4 AM and again at 6. After that, it is just greasy looking and full of mucous. Where is all that poop coming from? Thank goodness my vet is here today and he told me to bring her in and he wanted to keep her for the day. He said his first thought is colitis and he thinks Maddie's immune system may be low because of other problems she's had and mentioned the infection in her incision after her spaying is not common, so that, along with other things has made him think she's not able to fight off things on her own. He is also going to test her for giardia. He said there was an outbreak in an area not too far from where I live and Maddie's symptoms are that of giardia, so that's a possibility. Anyway, I just feel so bad for her and I can't stand to see her suffering. It sure was hard leaving her there...wish I could just stay there with her. Anyway, I just hope my vet can figure something out so she gets better. He is going to be on vacation all next week, so he won't be here if there's problems. |

Poor Maddie! I'll be thinking about her tonight! I hope things get better soon. |
Hello everyone and thanks for your kind messages. I have my Maddie home now and she's by no means well, but the vet said I should notice an improvement by tomorrow. All her tests were negative so it turns out to be colitis again. He said there was a lot of blood and bacteria in her poop. Poor Maddie had accidents while there...she just couldn't hold it in...she's such a mess, but I love that stinky puppy! He said she is in a lot of pain and that is probably why she has been throwing up. He told me from now on if she's up all night sick to just call him at home. He is such a great vet and I'm thankful for him. He put her on what he called a human antibiotic called metronidazole, 2X per day for 8 days. He also put her on a different food...Hills Prescription W/D. I hope she likes it. She cannot eat until tomorrow and she's so hungry...hasn't eaten since yesterday. The vet said he doesn't know why she's having problems like this...that it could be a food allergy or just that she is very sensitive and her body can't process like it should. He also said it could be whipworms...have any of you ever heard of that? He said whipworms can be easy to miss in studies, so he isn't ruling that out. Normally he gives a dewormer regiment, but he doesn't want to do that right now with Maddie being so sick. If she doesn't get better or comes down with this again, then he will do the worm thing, but for now, just the antibiotics, pepto bismol and lots of TLC. He (my vet) wants me to call him tomorrow to let him know how Maddie's doing. He's such a dear man! I feel just sick that I have to work tomorrow and can't get out of it. I have a neighbor who will check on her and my mom will come and check on her also, plus I'll be home for my lunch hour. Anyway, hopefully Maddie is on the mend! I'm so glad to have her back home with me! |
i'm so glad maddie is home with you. I know she feel better at least being with her mom. I had a yorkie, Dexter, who for 10 year could only eat the I/D dog food. Anything else made him sick. I hope she gets better soon. Is your vet going to refer you to someone else he is comfortable with while he's out of town? my baby Harley sends his love. harley's mom |

My Yorkie, Pixie is prone to colitis. Her vet diagnosed her by a process of elimination by doing all other tests. It's to dangerous to endoscope Toy Breeds so that wasn't done. Pixie was at last weigh in 5.2lbs. She's on Metronidazole, 250MG., I/4 tablet 2x's a day. In addition she is on 'Gastrafate', an Emulsified Suspension, Dog*Cat Formula, for her weight, .7ml., 2x's a day. This was to replace Sucralfate in tablet form that came out as it went in, not absorbed or digested. Her vet(we've been to many that didn't help Pixie), doesn't like Pepto, instead pepcid ac, 1/4 of a 10mg, 2x's a day. This didn't help Pixie, so Gastrafate was the final substitution. Also Prescription WD. She hates it but her vet told me to sprinkle a smidge of Parmesan cheese, (also I nuke it for a few seconds to remove the chill after refrigerated), on to make it more appealing. Pixie is on this for a longer period since she had a relapse when it was stopped. We talked about trying 'Tylon' which had been used in a very small dose for a dog I owned awhile back. He had colitis that was a mess, think the worst possible poop. He did well on this long term with a bland diet of rice a diet lean boiled hamburgers, was allergic to chicken. Pixie is doing well her routine. This vet has many Toy Breed patients, tinys compared to Pixie and it is chronic in many of them. Pixie now has 1/4 tsp. plain yougurt unhomogenized added to her food, 2x's a day, to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines and stimulate the immune system. Antibiotics can reduce the natural level of acdophilus in their body. She's playful. happy, not in pain, and normal stools. Her stools were tested monthly as well as her blood in the beginning, now every 2 months. This began after Pixie was 18 months. I must tell you that Pixie will only eat WD if hand fed. It can take 30 minutes to feed her. Sorry this is so long but I hope it will help you with Maddie. I hope Maddie feels better and makes a complete recovery. Jessica |
Poor little sweetie! Hope she gets better very soon! |
Starsky and I are so sorry to hear Maddie isn't feeling well. Can dogs get West Nile? I wondered if it could be that? We hope Maddie starts to feel better real soon!! Starsky blows kisses over to Maddie. :getwellso |
Connie~ Just saw this thread and i am so sorry your sweet little Maddie is so sick. This re confirms my conviction to stick to my guns about no human food. My family is always trying to sabotage my efforts in this area. Colitus can be painful and I had no idea it was this common in toy breeds. I hope what your vet is doing for her does the trick. Prettypuppypink~ Thanks you for letting us know about your baby to and her regimen as well as the fact that it didn't happen until 18 months. Sometimes we think they are out of the woods at 6 months for most things, but these helth issues crop up kater too. I am glad you have her problem under control. Sounds like work though. 30 minutes to hand feed her...wow. |
I hope Maddie gets to feeling better soon. |
Sick Feel better Maddie... |
Hi everyone! I'm smiling here! Maddie is doing SOOO much better today! The vet was right when he told me that! She's even wanting to play and I gave her a bath and she smells sweet again and that has to make her feel better too! We even slept last night! It felt so good and she didn't wake me until 6 and I had the alarm set for 6:15, so that was okay! She ate her W/D food and didn't seem too excited about it, but she was probably so hungry, she'd eat anything. I hope she continues to eat it so I don't have to be coaxing her again! She'll continue on the pepto bismol for 5 more days and 7 more days of the medicine. I have to tell you...it's impossible to get Maddie to take a pill. Last week when she saw that other vet, and the vet was going to give her her first pill, she tried and tried...ruining 2 pills in the process. Yesterday with our vet, I told him it's impossible to force a pill on Maddie and he said, "I'll show you how it's done"...he tried and tried and ruined 2 pills and finally gave up. LOL After all, Maddie is the little puppy that isn't welcome back at the grooming parlor...she'll fight it tooth and nail. I take those baby food chicken fingers and break a small piece off and put the pill inside and she takes it fine that way. My vet said I'll just have to continue doing it that way because Maddie makes it impossible. haha. Thanks for all the well wishes and I appreciate all of you so much! Prettypuppypink...thanks so much for all the info! I am going to print it out so I have it for reference and also will show my vet! Hope you all have a great weekend...it's beautiful here and that sunshine does a body good. Maddie says thanks and sends puppy kisses! |
I am so happy to hear that Maddie is much better. Hope she gets over that fast and give her lots of hugs and kisses, they love that. |
I hope she's better real soon. Please keep us posted. |
