constipated 6 week old puppy Last night my 6 1/2 week old puppy had a very hard time going poo. He finally did and then he acted like his usual self. Today, he was very lethargic so when I checked him, he had dried stool on his booty. I cleaned him up and he went potty. I put him back in bed but he is shivering. I am not sure if he has a tummy ache from pushing and because he had a "plug" could not go or if something else is wrong. Any suggestions? I don't know whether to take him to the vet as I am not sure what they can do. Like I said, once he was cleaned up he did go potty but I don't like him shivering. Thank you. |
Oh, dear. Yorkie puppies should stay with their moms until they are twelve weeks old. Your baby is way too young to be away from her. Did your breeder or vet warn you about hypoglycemia/low blood sugar? Young puppies are at great risk for this. Shivering is a sign of it. You need to get some Karo syrup, pancake syrup, even jelly, some sugar into him asap, then call your vet right away. This can be a life threatening situation. Here is some information about it: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...oglycemia.html |
Constipation Try letting him lick vaseline petroleum jelly or hairball formula off your fingers. It wont take much to grease his little belly so that he can go easier. It is pretty normal for puppies who have been weaned recently to have constipation. He is kind of young to be separated but that is another issue since you have him so treat the constipation. |
Try a little bit of canned pumpkin, maybe 1/2 Tablespoon..I would also get him a little bit of karo syrup(put a little on your finger and let him lick it off), and keep him warm..is he eating and drinking? |
Thank you for your responses. He and his sister are still with their mom. I was kind of surprised she did not take the dried stuff off his bottom but she didn't. They will be with their mom til they are around 12 weeks. He has stopped shivering. I think it was all the straining but he is his feisty self. Yes, he is eating, drinking, peeing and now playing. It is just the dried stuff was acting like a cork. I guess I just panicked (probably freaked more accurately describes me) and you all on YT are always soooo helpful that I wanted to get your opinions. I will continue to watch him but he seems to be just fine. Like I said, as soon as I got the dried stuff off, he had a BM. So thank you for your responses. You all are the greatest. |
LOL I just had to take my 6 mo. old in the bathroom and clean her butt...I was holding her and could smell something, felt 2 dried pieces of poop, so went to the bathroom sink ran warm water and worked them out..when you have 4 little dogs, that kind of stuff doesn't seem to bother you at all... |
