My sick Dulce My yorkie is about 3 months old. I brought her from the puppy store and right off the bat she's had this sniffling, and horse cough where it sounds like she's got something lodged in her throat. I took her to the vet of course and they gave me the result of 'Kennel Cough'. I've been giving her antibiotics now for almost 2 weeks, and she's still not overcome this completely. Should I wait this out, and she might get better naturally on her own? I'm just very nervous from all the reading of permanent damage to her trachea, this is my baby and I don't want that to happen. I'm considering switching vets, since I feel they are just taking more and more money from me, where they keep giving me the same answer and she's still coughing. What should I do? -Meeshy |
Welcome to yt. Thanks for joining us. Good luck with your new baby. I'm sure you will get some advice on here. |

Did you call the vet back? |
CDawnfine Yes I did, they tell me that she should be on the antibiotics until tomorrow. But her cough is still with her. Should i just seek a second opinion? Or trust my current vet? |
Thank you so much! I'm new to raising my yorkie. She is my dream dog. |
If I were you, I would get a second opinion.....just to be on the safe side. |
Signs of kennel cough lasts 7 to 21 days. |
I went back and forth with my Vet with Milo and Mouth Noises. My Vet explained that there is no real test for Kennel Cough and that it is just an educated guess. We went through patch this past fall where Milo kept making the noise, I recorded the noise for the vet to hear, but then she requested video and that was to difficult to get. Finely she told me that if it did not get better she wanted to do the trech test, well I flipped out, but as I was on the way to pick up his last round of antibiotics he started to make the noise I rushed him into the Vet so the Dr. could see and low and behold it was reverse sneezing, prob. brought on by allergies in the fall. So my advise would be this is your baby and you know just like I knew it was not the trech., I would try to capture the coughing on video with sound and show it to the Vet. This way the puppy is not taking drugs it does not need. |

Boosted Panda, This eases my mind. My vet explained to me last night that the antibiotics are just to make sure it doesnt get worse, and that it saves her trachea from irritation. About how long do you remember? I just get so worried, because she is less than 5 pounds, so its hard seeing her cough like that. =/ Thanks so much everyone for the feedback! |
are then any irritants in the home? Plug in air fresheners....hairspray being sprayed??? if she does suffer ct. All of these are bad news for them. Cigarette smoke being the worst for dogs with ct. |
