Gagging? Help I don't know what is wrong Diddy was just laying here on my lap and got up and started to gag. I thought he was going to vomit but didn't. Now he keeps gagging. Do you think something is stuck in his throat? I tried to get him to take a sip of water and he won't. He is having trouble barking too. I don't know what to do. He is breathing fine. Any Suggestions??? |
There could be something lodged in his throat..Id take him to a vet to check if it were me.. Dawn |
Oh My Never Have Experienced This But Will Say A Prayer Maybe Try Ice Cube To Lick On Im Not Sure .. Vet Vet Vet! |
He did lick on an ice cube and he can bark now. He is walking around fine and just took a poo. He just keeps doing this thing now and then like he is trying to clear his throat. Sort of like a cat when it has a hairball. All the vets here are closed now. |
It sounds like he's got something stuck in his throat. Isn't there an emergency number for your vet that you can call if you need to? |
It sound a little like kennel cough but hopefully not. |
I had one of mine doing a gagging thing and I looked in the very corner of his mouth and there was a few strands of hair about 4-5 inches long going down his throat!...it's worth checking if he has long hair on his face.... |
I just called the emergency vet. They said to bring him in if I feel i need to. He isn't doing it as often. He is running around like normal. I don't know if I should take him in or not. I am going to wait a few more minutes and if he does not stop I am taking him in. |
Are his gums nice and pink? |
TJ does this. Is it like his throat is pulsing? I am not sure what happens, but after a little while TJ is fine. I rub his throat and talk him out of what ever he is doing. It might be related to reverse sneeze thingy :p |
When in ? I would always have the vet check. Its easier to do that than let something go by and get a head start of dragging your little one down. Hope he is okay. Give us an update. |
Folowing The Update Keep Us Posted .... |
nuetering I am going to have Topaz neutered in a little while and I don't know anything about it. Is it painful, and how long before he will be normal again? Also does it take a long time to do the surgery? Any information will be helpful. |
Just checking to see how your baby is . |

The surgery doesn't take that long but they will want you to drop him off early in the morning and a lot of places keep them overnight. Consider getting blood work done (I do but not everyone feels it is necessary) and make sure the vet uses either Isoflurane or Sevoflurane to put them under. |
update on Diddy Thanks to everyone for the replies and concerns! I took Diddy To the emergency vet last night and they checked his throat. They could not see or feel anything. They wanted to sedate him to take a better look but I was uneasy about that. He was not doing it as much at the vets office so I thought maybe he got rid of whatever was causing him to gag. The vet didn't think it was anything major but said that they would do xrays if I felt the need. I decided to take him home and monitor him and if it gets worse I would have the xrays done. Diddy was fine on the way home and as soon as we got home he did it again. I took him to bed with me (He usually sleeps in a crate) and after a little while he fell asleep. He woke up around 2:30 am doing it again. I gave him some water and we went back to sleep. He seemed fine this morning. He didn't do the gagging, he ate ok, and even wanted to play. I had to leave him home and go to work and that upset me. I just want to be home with my little one to make sure he is ok. I am going to be sitting here at work all day thinking about it. I hope when I go home he is ok and has no more gagging episodes! He is my first dog and I love him to pieces! This event, even though was not real serious scared me to death! I tend to worry too much sometimes. Thanks again to everyone. I am so glad I found this site with so many caring people and who understand the love we have for our babies. |
Now that you said this happened in the middle of the night, I think it may be allergies or CT related. There was one day last year that Roxy kept honking and gagging, pretty much all day long. She has both allergies and mild CT. I tried to do everything to get her to stop. But she kept carrying on, she looked like a snake with the gagging and the little tongue in and out, in and out. This went on through the night too. Honking, gagging, throat pulsing, sleep and then again...honking, gagging, throat pulsing and then to sleep - every 1/2 hour this cycle would happen. Finally the next day was Saturday, I decided to shave down her belly to cool her down and I gave her a bath and let the bathroom steam up, we stayed in there for a very long time, but it opened her up completely. This never happened that bad again. Also, weight has a lot to do with it. Is he over weight at all? |

When you say it started when you came home ... like TLC, I'm thinking allergies ... How old is he? |
