Help needed for 8 wk old.... mazzakins vbmenu_register("postmenu_1732125", true); YorkieTalk Newbie! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/cus...tar27210_3.gif Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: manchester uk Posts: 1 :icon1: help my puppy still has Diarrhoea Hi everyone im at my wits end please can you help, As you can see from the picture I have a gorgeous 8wk old male yorkie (Billy)that has been hand reared from 2wks, I have had him for nearly 3weeks now. He has been at the vets 3 times, with a 4th in the morning by the look of it. When I got him he was being fed on Heinz tinned porridge & chicken baby food, The vet said to try him on puppy food straight away, this I did & tried him on a small amount of butchers puppy which he loved but a few hours later loose stools. I tried for 4 days with a little of the old food & the Heinz baby gradually but still not much better, so back to the vets this time they suggested dried food, so tried enkunuba gradually, still same problem back to vets & Billy was given diarsanyl twice a day, & vet suggested chicken & rice, so tried this he seemed to be better but after 5 days tried to introduce enkunba again(just 5 pieces along with rice/chicken) but here we are again. He has loose stools in fact they have never been really solid since I got him. He is really grumpy (as you can imagine) & tries to bite me when I least suspect it. I have had dogs before I currently have a 3 yr old shihtzu as well & have never had this problem before (mind you had Billy’s mum not died I would never have taken a dog this young before) Please can anyone give me advise on what I should feed him & how much. confused: |
I'm not real sure what advice to give except that if he was better on chicken and rice I would stick with that for now. Rice especially is a good stool former, rice absorbs extra water in the intestines and can help solidify poo. I think I would also talk to the vet again. Perhaps he needs some stool cultures to be done to make sure there is not a bacteria responsible. |
If you can find canned pumpkin (not sure where you'd get it in Europe, maybe a gourmet shop?) that seems to help firm up stools from what I've read. This is probably temporary, given that the baby wasn't able to suckle longer on his mother and wean properly. Immature digestive tract maybe. |
I have no advice but bumping this up so more people can see it and maybe help? |
It could be the change in the foods are being taken too suddenly! I agree with the earlier post as far as keeping him on chicken and rice if he seems to be doing well on it. Also try some home-cooking (maybe the chicken and rice and slowly mix in the puppy food for him) maybe that will help to ease his belly. |
I agree with the chicken and rice. He should stay on that for a couple of weeks, until he's good and healthy again, and a little yogurt each day to re-balance the bacteria in the digestive tract. Then, very very slowly add crushed kibbles to his food. |
