Fever. Anything I can do?
 
Harley has been very lethargic today and tonight while watching the game he hopped onto my lap. He is sooo hot. It's obvious he has a fever. He weighs about 13.5 lbs. Is there any meds I can give him to help with his fever? (motrin, ibuprofen, tylenol?) Do I need to have the baby kind? And how much of it do I give to him?

Please, absolutely none of those meds. They are extremely dangerous to dogs. I am not sure what drug to use to lower a fever. I think I would call an er vet and ask. I'm sorry.:(

My vet told us that any amount of tylenol can be fatal....as it causes organs to shut down.

Please do not give anything for fever with talking with a vet.....I understand that dog's bodies break down these drugs differently that people.

You might offer Harley some ice chips and maybe consider a cool washrag to cool him off. (Not sure I would do a bath, I would hate to get him chilled.)

Thank you. I didn't know about the pain meds being so dangerous. Our previous vet recommended baby asprin once for fever when Harley was really young but he was so much smaller then so I didn't know about his dosage now. Maybe there is a fever reducing med I can buy from my vet made specifically for dogs. I also remember when all my dogs contracted kennel cough we had to give them all baby cough syrup along with their meds to calm their coughing down. I'm going to call our local emergency vet right now. I'm going to try the cool rag and ice chips. :)

You need to take is temperature and see exactly how high it is. A high temperature could indicate he has an infection going on somewhere and he may need to go to the vets.

If he doesn't perk up entirely by tomorrow morning he's going straight to the vet.

I just called the E-Vet and the recommended not giving him asprin since it can be rough on their bellys. But to call tomorrow if the fever is still presisting and then bring him in.

How does a person know what to do about giving a doggie aspirin when one place recommends it and another says "NOOOO!"? Just found out the other day that the ASPCA Dog Poison Control Center does not recommend giving Pepto-BismolŪ to calm a dog's stomach after he/she has vomited. Said it has aspirin in it.:confused: Various sources, including my vet, recommended it. (Just a little info: My 6.5 lb. pommie ate about 1 1/2 c. of chicken salad and Poison Control said I needed to induce vomiting.:( ) Joanne :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :dog:

Oh I know how you feel. It is all very confusing. I'm hoping he will start to feel better soon. I got him to eat some ice chips and laid a cool rag on him for about a half an hour. He's still very warm and when I put him onto my bed to go to sleep he hopped off, skulked off to his crate and laid down. He has NEVER refused sleeping in my bed before. He must be feeling pretty badly. I hope by tomorrow morning he will have perked up. The E-Vet made a good point that he may be a little overheated from excitement/stress because we did have some people over for the super bowl tonight so you never know, he might just be being a drama queen. (hope so :D ) We don't have an appropriate thermometer (sp) so tomorrow morning I'm running to the drug store to get a digital *rear end* :rolleyes: thermometer (sp). And if his temp is up we're headed to the vets asap. I'll keep you guys updated. :animal-pa

The whole meds thing is very confusing. I have the book "Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" and it recommends Aspirin as a short term analgesic but does recommend that it be enteric-coated. I had a Malamute who had stomach problems and he got Pepto all the time for his upset stomach. It helped him alot and the book recommends it. I hightly recommend the book to everyone. :thumbup:

Induce vomiting for chicken salad? Did it have onions in it?

Aspirin is an NSAID that has lots of side effects. Some people believe that if a dog is in pain the benefits outweigh the risks. Others feel it is too dangerous. I personally do NOT give it but I might someday under the supervision of a vet...

Update! This morning he felt a lot cooler and his tail sure is wagging a lot more! We ran to the pharmacy, got a rectal thermometer and his temp is 99.9, norm is 100 so I think he's fine. He ate breakfast no problem and went potty normally. I guess maybe the Super Bowl really did stress him out! Next year, we're watching the Puppy Bowl instead!
