Torn ACL My baby has been limping since Saturday. She is 8 years old and has never had anything like this happen to her. She ran up the steps and then just layed down and wouldn't move. I picked her up and when I put her down again, I saw she was limping. She won't put any pressure on her right back leg. I took her to the vet this morning and he told me she probably has a torn ACL and will probably need surgery. He gave her an anti-inflammatory and told me to call him Wednesday if she is not better. I can't imagine her being operated on. He said the operation is going to cost about $2000. Is that the going rate? I will do anything to make her feel more comfortable. I hope she is going to be ok. cry: |
Welcome to YT:) I'm sorry your baby is going through this.:( And $2000 for this surgery may very well be the going rate but    that's a lot of money. We have to do what we have to do though.:) |
Where in NY are you? I see a specialist in Westbury (Long Island) - Dr. Hinton http://vetspecialist.com/ And YES that's probably the going rate :( |
I am in Chappaqua, NY in Westchester County. Although, my breeder is in Oakdale,NY. My vet is calling in an specialist if she is not better by Wednesday. |
I had a Yorkie years ago that had that and he had the surgery and they also regrooved his kneecap and it was around 800.00 but that was in the mid 1980's. He did fine but would still favor that leg when standing sometimes. He was around 7 years old and lived to be 13 with no further leg problems. I would get a second opinion also and I had an orhtopedic specialist to the surgery. I will keep her in my prayers! |
I am so sorry.:( Have you seen this vet for a while? And he said it could be. If possible I would take her for another opinion before having surgery. |
thank you for all your well wishes. I will keep you posted. |
Welcome to YT! Post a picture of your girl! |
I am trying to learn the ins and outs of the yorkie site. Can't seem to figure out where I posted the picture of Coco. |
Coco is supposed to go in for surgery on Wednesday. I am having second thoughts after speaking to the breeder. She wants me to wait 3 weeks and see if the leg gets better. I am so confused. Coco wants to play with her toys and I won't play with her. She is hoping around on three legs most of the time. She gently puts the right hind leg down but without any pressure. Is there any way that a torn acl can heal on its own? |
Surgery for Coco Coco had her surgery today. After trying the conservative management route, I opted to have the surgery on her torn acl. I waited six weeks she still was still hoping around on three legs. so I thought I had better just have the surgery done. The vet told me she was resting and I would be able to bring her home tomorrow. I am a little nervous to bring her home. Hopefully, she will have an easy recuperation. :) |
just wanted to say i hope your babie is feeling better soon sendinghugs your way:) |
torn acl thank you for your well wishes. I will keep my fingers crossed.:) |

So sorry! Quote:
He should have taken X-rays!! |
Guess I should have read....... the whole thread! She should be fine! You wouldn't believe how those little dogs would act when the owners would come and pick them up! You wouldn't have thought there was a thing wrong! They're tuff little cookies!;) |
I tried to post the photo and it is in the profile, but not under the posting. How do I get it to post when I send a message or reply to a posting? |
Coco is doing so well!! I am so pleased. Even with the bandage on she is walking around. She is acting as if nothing has been done. The vet will be taking the stitches out in two weeks, so I guess that is when the bandage will come off. Hopefully, she will take it easy after the bandage comes off. |
Just found your thread - first of all, glad to hear the surgery went well! Sending lots of get well wishes Coco's way:) Last summer, Gabby, tore her ACL on her right hind leg....not sure how she did it but she did! Surgery was less than $1000 and it took her almost 8 weeks to begin putting pressure on the leg. Do what the vet says and in no time, she'll be back to her normal, playful self:) |
I guess New York prices are on the high side. It cost me $2300!! But if that will make her feel better and she is able to walk on all four legs it's worth it. We just won't eat for 6 months (LOL). We all know that when it comes to our babies, we would do anything for them. That's just how it is! |
I had coco's bandage removed today and now she can't wait at all. She is not even hoping on her three legs. I don't know how she is going to go to the bathroom. I have been carrying her around. How long does it take for them to start walking? I don't know what do. She was much better last week when I brought her home, which was a day after the surgery. Any feed back is appreciated. Thanks Cheryl |
Glad to hear she got her bandages off. It's been so long since I had a dog that had the surgery, but maybe she was on pain meds right after the surgery and she didn't feel the pain. I would call your vet and see what they say. |
