Demodex does anyone have any advice? :( My older dog is not a yorkie but I hoped maybe someone on here would have some advice for me. She was recently diagnosed with a skin infection and the doctor seemed to think that the infection caused some demodex. She was on a round of antibiotics and it has improved the skin infection but the demodex seems slightly worse. Apparently, the normal medication they would use to treat this, can not be used on Collies. The vet seems to think that this kind of thing happens with a compromised immune system and there is a strong possibility that it could be Cancer. She is doing a test first to rule out a fungus of some sort but doesn't really think that is it. Does anyone have any knowledge of demodex and if there is any natural way to treat it? And does it happen frequently with cancer? :( |
I think it's treated with Ivermectin and Collies are sensitive to it. Usually dogs that get demodex this bad can't fight things like they should. I have no idea about the cancer part. I'm sorry.:( |
Gracie has demodex and she is being treated with Ivermectin. She has been on this treatment for about 2 years now. And the demodex is under control as long as she takes the Ivermectin. No one has said anything about the frequency of cancer to us. I know of another treatment, but I don't remember the name right off hand.. sorry, but it is a spot treatment and more expensive then ivermectin. I can ask the vet for you if you need me to. |
Charlie had demodex for most of his life, and never treated until he came to live with me in March '07 He was on ivermectin also, and just had another scraping last week to rule out thinning coat. If he does have demodex, do not give him cortisoids since they activate the mites ie prednisone, etc. Hope he recovers soon and the underlying cause is found. When they are older (Charlie is 10), their immune system plays a factor. Warmly, Deborah |
Charlie also takes a dose of Revolution each month to keep it under control. |
PSS I do not advocate dips...too harmful to their genitals. |
