refuses medication Hi all: GiGi has been on Proin 25 for her bladder since August of 07. The past two weeks she has refused to take it (I had to mash it in yougart, etc). I am wondering if her refusing the medication ahs anything to do with her illness. I am on the verg of increasing her dosage a little cause she has had on or two very mild accidents. Has anyone else seen a change in their dogs habits regarding their medication. My busy season hit on January 2...so I am wonderin if she is just responding to the fact that I am not giving her as much attention or if it is somethiing else. She would just chew it up like a treat...now nothing. Anyone? Tina |
Does she like cheese..I always roll up the meds in that, and Gus takes it right away..Hope GiGi is doing better soon! :) |
I tried that...it was a struggle also. Thanks though Tina |
Loki takes that stuff twice a day. It smells disgusting but he loves it. I've never had to hide it?? Try hiding in cheese with a follow up big hunk of cheese. Typically mine swallow the little one with the pill so they can get to the bigger one. |
have you tried peanut butter or cream cheese? |
Dixie is my kidney patient pup and she just started on 3 meds and 2 are twice a day. I told the vet that liquid was easier for me so I just syringe it in her 6 times a day. The pharmacist made it checken flavor and I didn't even ask him to. Maybe you can get it in a liquid form. It is almost impossible to get any of my dogs to eat a pill if they don't want to. |
Pharmacist like in "people" pharmacist? Chicken flavor? They can do that? I know that they have flavors for children, but pets? Wonderful! Sounds like a wonderful solution. Joanne :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :dog: |
2 different ways to get it down mash it up in some raw turkey. I have had some dogs that like raw turkey. Also my yorkies love small curd cottage cheese. I have some info for you if you would email me. I can't send it through these posts. |
I go to a special pharmacy,it's for humans but he also does all the special meds for vets, it's an old time type, where they compund the medicine since Dixie is so small the regular form is way too strong, so the pharmacist breaks it down for her size and adds the flavor. I thought that was so cute to make it chicken flavor. I know tell Dixie it's treat time and she gets her medicine. The phamacy also did Maya, my poms meds for her Cushings. The pharmacist has all these dog and cats pics posted with letters from the pets/owners and was so nice. Quote:

Tinav, what ended up being wrong? What symptoms? Ellie's liver checks out okay right now and her u/a was normal, xray normal... We might do a u/s soon if we don't find an answer for Ellie's accidents. When I have to give Ellie pills I just shove them down her throat. Have you tried a pill gun? |
Try the Chicken sticks the baby food ones for babies. Thats what I give mine when I have to put a pill in it and they are very soft you can just push it in and the dog eats it so fast they never have a clue they took any pill :) And I haven't found one yet that didn't like them. I use peanut butter. That is the only way Diddy will take his pills. |
GiGi has a bladder problem....she is doing good on the Proin25. The thing that worried me was that she refused the meds when she always would just chew them herself with no prob. Yes I can just put the med on the back of her toung so she has to swollow it but I just couldn't understand the change in her. I was brgining to think she knows better than me. Tina |
Elle May....did they check her bladder. My vet knew with out much testing. He knew from things that I had told him about her accidents and a unrin test. But I had gone to another vet previously who did more testing to no avail. Tina |
