Herniated Disc in back - Anyone else had this?
 

My little Maddie was just diagnosed with a herniated disc. She was in so much pain but now the vet has her on a muscle relaxer and morphine and thinks that she will get better without surgery if we keep her quiet. She's resting quietly now but I feel so bad for her. She was in so much pain that she wouldn't move.

Anyone elses little one ever experience this?

Many years ago my yorkie Zorro had one, we thought he had had a stroke by the way he was acting. I don't remember what they gave him but he did get better and was fine for a long time. I hope your baby is feeling better soon.

My son's little Weiner dog had the same thing happen - he had surgery and is good as new now - you'd never know he has such an awful problem -

i'm sorry maddie has a herniated disc. How is she? Can she get around on her own? Does she have control over her urination and defecation? If so then i would think she can be medically managed. If she "goes down", as in not being mobile, then she would probably need an MRI and surgery. If the medical management doesn't seem to be helping in a few days i would get an MRI done on her to see what exactly is the problem, then you can go from there. I hope the meds help her out. Confinement is key here, the less she moves the better. Use a sling to help her when walking/pottying (if she's unstable) so she doesn't fall and make things worse. good luck!

One of our dogs had a ruptured disk. It required surgery ... feel free to PM me if you have questions.

The biggest thing for now is to keep her resting so the swelling can go down.

Our Sailor is currently having issues with her back. Sounds similiar in that she stopped moving....in fact just froze in a standing position like she could not operate her legs at one point. Our vet watched her move and things it is a slipped disk or pinched nerve.....gave her some meds and put her on rest for two weeks.....and said no more jumping on/off anything.

Sailor was better after the two weeks and stayed better for another week/10 days, but the jumping is a huge issue.....as soon as we turn our back or walk away, she is jumping somewhere.....if we keep her crated, she is fine. So we are having to keep her confined anytime we are not with her and able to give her our complete attention.....as we know the jumping is causing her back issues.

(Interesting side note.....Sailor has LP and we figured that was what was going on and we see issues with that off and on.....but when the vet watched her move in his office, he said it was not LP as she was walking on the very tips of her back feet.....and he thinks that most of the times we were seeing issues with her it was not the LP, but instead her back....as he felt she had been having back issues for some time. So we are now learning to watch her movement to determine if the issue is her back or LP or some of both.)

I hope Maddie responds to the meds and rest and begins to recover! It is so sad to see them hurting and scary when they will not move. You are in my thoughts and prayers!

Thank you all for your concerns and well wishes. Maddie is doing much better. She is able to walk around to eat and go out to the bathroom. I don't believe she is in much pain now but she is definitely not back to her old self yet. I think the muscle relaxers make her tired which is good. I had her crated the first couple of days while she was on the morphine but now she is resting in her favorite little bed. I had to block off the stairs and put blocks up in front of the furniture so she won't try to jump on them. My vet said that it should heal if we are careful with her and that she won't require surgery unless it ruptures. She said no more stairs for Maddie ever.

On the bright side, Maddie loves being treated like the little princess that she is. I have been letting her come on walks with my other 3 babies but she rides in the stroller. Yeah, I'm finally getting some use out of it. She also enjoys being packed up and down the stairs and is soaking up all the extra attention everyone is giving her.

I just hope that she gets better and this isn't a reoccuring problem for her. I am to take her back to the vet in 2 weeks so she can see how she is doing.
