The Dreaded Kennel Cough Wee Sebo (8 mnths old) has contracted the dreaded Kennel Cough, possibly from a grooming parlour. Our Vet prescribed 1 week on antibiotics, and a herbal rememdy to supplement the antibiotics. 1 week from the first signs of the disease, and 4 days into the course of meds., the wee man seems to have shown no improvement, and if anything, seeem to be slightly worse! Has anyone has the experience of Kennel Cough with their dogs, and if so, how long did it last, did it get worse before it got better and what were the most common symptoms! Thanks for your time! Mine havent had it but I have read that it can take sometimes a month or better for them to get rid of it |
I'm sorry your poor baby is having to deal with this.... kennel cough can be nasty and take FOREVER to fade away... I had a question about this as well.... the nasal bordetella vaccination is (from what I understand) given in pups at about 4 weeks of age?? Is that correct?? After that, should they continue to have a "booster" regularly? Especially if they are social and / or frequent groomer's, dog parks, etc. ? |

We have gotten it a few times at the shelter I work at. It does seem to take about two weeks for the symptoms to go away. The sooner you catch it the easier to get rid of. We vaccinate for it but I don't think the vaccine works that well. |
Riley got it when he was 3 months. I was scared to death the entire time he had it. He would get worse then better and worse again. It took about a month for him to be fully over it. Has he had the Bordetella vaccine yet? I'm not sure if it helps, but it might. He won't be able to get it until hes completely better though. If he keeps coughing alot, ask the vet to give u a cough suppressant. This helped Riley alot. It calmed his cough so he was able to sleep through the night and be well rested. Hopefully your baby will get better soon!!:) |
Ariel caught Kennel Cough at 11 weeks old, 1 week after we had her. I was so scared because I never had to deal with it with my older dog. She was so inactive ... completely lethargic. Her vaccination schedule went off track because of it. I felt so sorry for her :( It took her about a month to get over it. We hope your little man has a speedy recovery. It'll seem like forever, but he'll get through it soon enough. :) |
Thanks for the replies! It is a worrying condition indeed, the poor wee thing looks like he's in so much pain when he coughs, and at night time, his whining and bubbling really breaks your heart! It seems that this morning, the cough isn't so bad, and he's jumping around like he should be, wanting to play with the new toys we've spoiled him with this week, although there was a wee bit of yellow bile laying on the floor from coughing way too hard! I'll definately be asking the vet for the vaccine once he's made a full recovery, and I can forsee another round of antibiotics to hopefully rid the cough once and for all! |
Luna had that when I got her, and it took two rounds of antibiotics before she got better. Call the vet and let them know that there is no improvement so they can give a stronger med. Well wishes to your wee one:love:! |
