lyme disease vaccination in puppy today.. help please..
 
i just got the lyme disease vaccination for my puppy today.. probably about 4 hours ago and he's acting strange.... he's never had any reaction to any other vaccination... but with this one his leg swelled up.. and it must be painful that i can't even touch it without him whining... he can't even walk on it..

i read something about feeding dog children's benadryl.. i don't know if i should do that..

PLEASE HELP ASAP!!

i'm so worried about my puppy =[

Call your vet. Children's Benadryl is good for reactions but this may be too severe. He may need a shot. Is he breathing okay? How much is it swelling?

My Yorkie went into shock and collapsed after one of her vaccines...pretty scary.

he's breathing fine.. and he's eating fine.. his leg is swelled up though.. i think it's more swollen and painful to him than anything..

i just called my vet.. and they're closed so i called the emergency vet and they said to bring him in.. but then i asked about the benadryl and they said to give him 1/4 a tsp since he's so little..

if that doesn't work.. then i'll go to emergency vet.. if he's okay by then i'll take him tomorrow morning.

i refuse to take him out of my sight for the night.

am i being too overbearing or anything? i'm just scared.. =[

I don't know why your vet gave it at all unless it is a severe problem in your area. It is a risky vaccine when kidney failure could be a side effect. For the record, I like veterinary partner's list of disadvantages to the vaccine but I don't necessary agree with their reasons to give it. There are very few good reasons to vaccinate against this disease.

No, you are just being a concerned owner and you should be.:) Benadryl is fine and if the leg is normal by morning I don't even think you have to go to the vet. Maybe just call? The problem with swelling is that swelling can happen inside (throat closure), so just watch. Make sure his gums are nice and pink and if they aren't, take him in immediately.

thanks for the info.. i'm really rethinking about the whole vaccine thing.. i'm just wondering why my vet would even think of giving my baby so many vaccines when i pay monthly.. i know it's not for the money...

Vets seem to think they are all necessary and they should be done annually. The AVMA and AAHA came out with vaccine guidelines that make more sense. I also like Dr. Jean Dodds vaccine protocol. I haven't heard of Lyme's Disease in Illinois being a major problem. It isn't a huge thing here. Ellie's vet office is a bit vaccine crazy and they don't even do this one.

Being as they gave your dog lymes, I'm sure they gave Lepto too. This should only be given to Yorkies in endemic areas (and maybe not even then). Yorkies have died from it and it has lots of side effects. The reactions to this vaccine can get progressively worse every time it is given. Corona vaccine is also not necessary.

Lepto? he got the guardia vaccine today too.. i don't know if that's the correct spelling of it.. and the only spot that's sore is the spot that he took for the lyme disease..

i just read about the corona virus too.. and it really is NOT necessary.. but he's already gotten it and the booster..

i don't know... he just had some children's benadryl lik half an hour ago and he just took a nap.. ad he woke up and he seems okay now.. he still won't walk around or anything.. bu he did get up.. and he seems more alert..

hopefully he gets better.. i'm gonna keep checking up on him.. my poor chippy.. yes chip is his name =D

Giardia is also unnecessary. I would question your vet about why they give so many. WOW.:eek:

It would be nice if the only thing vaccines did was prevent disease but they are being linked to serious problems like autoimmune disease and possibly worse.

I hope Chip is doing better.

thanks for all your help.. and yeah chippy is doing a little better.. he walks a little better now.. and he seems much better... regardless i'm going to take him to the vet in the morning just to check... and to ask why so many vaccines are necessary..

i'll post a picture of my baby up soon so you can see why i'm so terribly worried about him =D

I recently learned that the lepto vaccine covers 2 strands.

Did you know there's really 8 strands? I guess the 2 they vaccinate for are just more common ...

if you are in upper ill near wisconsin that lyme's disease was very high this year. my vet never gave any of my dogs that shot until this year he saids in our subdivision alone there were 7 cases in dogs. its strange to we dont live in the woods or anything we are in town.

actually i am in upper illinois near wisconsin.. i mean i'm more in the chicago area.. but still close to that area you're talking about..


and this morning my chippy seemed all better.. he was playing with our other yorkie and barking and running around.. so i'm guessing he had a normal reaction since he's so little....

Yes, the lepto vaccine covers either two or four strains. Then there is another one that covers four, I believe. For your dog to be as protected as possible against lepto they would have to have two vaccines twice a year (dependingon the area).:eek: Then there are still no guarantees.

Glad this all worked out! How scary. Sounds like your vet is an old-school over-vaccinator - so, if it were me, I'd tell HIM what vaccines to give rather than the other way around.

Also, did he give the vax right IN the leg or something? That's kind of odd - or was it more upper "thigh"?

After vaccines, look for swelling in the face and always check gums. If they're having a sever reaction, their gums will almost always go quite pale.
