Limping after getting up My 1 yr 4 mo old baby is limping this morning. It's happened before, like if she gets up after laying in one position for a long time, like she has a "hitch" and it just needs to work itself out. This happens to me too. LOL:p Of course I am in my 40's!:p Anyhow, this morning she got out of bed (ours) as usual, we have a step-stool for our dogs to get down off the bed, so they do not have to jump far. And for an hour now she is still limping, holding her right hind leg up as she walks. It gets better, then worse. This time of morning is her "cozy" time, she gets up from bed but still wants to cuddle til she's fully awake, so she hasn't been running around much yet in order to work out whatever stiffness she has. I just wonder has anyone else had this happen? I know if it lasts longer than usual I will take her to the Vet. But just curious. NEVER MIND!! LOL .... she just ran in from outside and is fine. I guess she needed to run around in the yard in the sun for a while to work out the stiffness. But still....anyone else have this happen in your youngster? |
Yes, both of mine have done this on occasion and cause a world of worry on my part. Just when I get ready to take them to the vet about it they start running around just fine. I have no idea why they do this! |
Thank you, Tiffany. It helps to know others do this. Now she is fine, but after a while of sitting it was back for a little while. She's such a solid sleeper, I think she sleeps in one position almost all night long, so maybe this is the reason? Anyhow, today was one of the worse days I've seen this. Usually it works itself out nearly immediately. I was worried today for sure! |
Well, now its evening and she's back to hopping on 3 legs.  We took both our dogs for walks, and she walked like normal including running. Then she layed down for a nap, and woke up hopping/limping again. I debated giving her a bath as I had wanted to today, but then decided to go for it. The warm water must've helped, because now she is running around in that famous "post-bath race". So..... I just don't know. I'm worried. We'll see how she does tomorrow. |
Yes. One of mine goes through this limping thing about once a year. The vet said she has anatomically weak hips. It is a fact of life for her. The other one is fine and can jump off the back of the couch at 4 years old. |
this could be a sign of luxating patellas. It may seem to bother her one minute and then she could be fine the next. this is because the patella is popping in and out of place. when she's 'fine' the patella is where it is suppose to be and it doesn't bother her. when its out, she is holding the leg up. Its quite common in small breeds. I would take her to your reg vet to have her evaluated and then a specialist if you vet thinks she has LPs. Depending on the grade of the LP she may need to have surgery done. Hitching the leg up and walking on three legs is a sign on pain. Usually when they are doing this they are grade 3 or 4 and need to have the surgery. Grade 1 or 2 can usually wait unless the dog is showing signs of pain or discomfort. |
I made an appointment at the Vet for her, I will keep you all posted with the results of the exam. Thanks again. |

I agree here - I've never dealt with LP but friends have and I've read a ton about it - it's not a good sign she's limping at only a year or so old ...I'm sorry :( Good luck at the vet !! |
Update UPDATE!! I am back from the Vet. Abbie does not have Luxating Patellas. :D Thank Goodness!!!! The Vet thinks she has a soft tissue injury, in the area of the ligaments. We are not sure how she got it simply from getting out of bed, since she has a stepstool she uses. But I am to give her some Metacam until Monday, and then call and bring her in again if she is not better. At that time they will do XRays, but he does not think it's anything in the bones. He said I could've gotten Xrays today if I wanted but I decided to try the anti-inflams first to see if she gets better. Doubtful Xrays will show anything. Now to keep this LITTLE RASCAL from running around the backyard like a tasmanian devil until Monday, so she can heal up !!! |
That's great news ! :) |
